Does anyone's dog store leftover food in their back teeth? My little doxie is horrible about this. I have to rub the back.. outside of his mouth to get the food loose so he swallows it.. It also makes his breath smell terrible.. Any suggestions?

Ew, yuck! Are you feeding soft or hard food?
We give dental bones and/or brush when that happens, though many of the ladies on the board favor antlers for general oral health. For overall breath smell, we use Plaque Off in her water.
I'd think chewing on something like the antlers or dental bone would knock it loose, but maybe someone else has a better idea.
I brush his teeth a couple days a week. We feed hard food. I do give him stuff to chew on all the time and it doesn't help. I just started using something that goes in his water so I'm hoping that helps.
What are antlers? lol
I would recommend a toothbrush, antlers, and bully sticks.
Thanks for sticking around
Best Bully Sticks is normally a good place to find safe treats for you pup.

NP! : ) I figured I'd just hang tough through it. haha I still need to know what the heck an antler is..? Does DH need to go kill something and bring one home? haha. I'll check out your link for sure. Thanks!

Yeah. It is was it is I guess. lol Everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how rude it may be. haha
He is adorable isn't he! haha : ) Thanks!
Has he always done it? Maybe it's just a quirk he'll grow out of? Hmm...
Your husband doesn't have to kill the deer himself (though by all means he can), but they are like deer antlers or I think some people use moose antlers, too?
Someone else is definitely going to have to point you in the right direction for where to buy those, since we don't use them. We would, but G isn't big into chewing for the sake of chewing (unless it's a pair of my shoes).
Love the photo, your pup is adorable!
Yes and I hope he grows out of it quick! haha
It's literally a deer antler. Dogs love to chew on them. You can buy them at specialty pet stores. My pup loves them!
OH! ok, so they are real antlers. That' the part I was unsure of. He (DH) would love to go hunting that's for sure, but I think I'll settle for buying some.
Dex would love to chew my shoes, but we keep him out of our bedroom for the most part. He loves to try to sniff them out though.
Thanks for the bolded above! : )
Are they expensive?
I'm glad you stuck around, too.
Your dog is adorable.
I'm of absolutely no use in this post, but I just wanted to say those two things. lol
Snow!
<a href="http://www.thenest.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Home DThey can be, but we bought one for Zoey (who doesn't chew it constantly like she does with stinkier/tastier items, like bully sticks) back in December from our fave local pet store. She's barely put a dent in it. So they certainly last! I think the one we bought was around $10-11? I can handle that ever couple of months (or longer, since this one is still hanging around!).

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I posted on the other thread "because it needs to be said" in response to you! : )
I'll check it out! Thanks!
ok, that's not so bad, we can deal with that : )
We have larger dogs that are power chewers, and we buy 18 inch antlers that are 2-3 inches in diameter. They last our dogs several months.
Antlers are naturally shed, so if he hunts, he could always go out and collect antlers. They're pretty easy to clean-you just have to boil them.
We buy ours from a locally-owned pet store, and only get them about twice a year.
Would a petsmart have something like this? : )
North of Denver, Co
You might also be able to talk to hunters in the area or scout out areas during shed. I brought back prong antlers while I did field season in your area that I picked up once they were shed. I disinfected them and the husband cut them up.
Definitely watch D's teeth. Doxies have notoriously bad teeth (they tend to rot/loosen fairly early compared to other breeds) and he could crack a tooth on them (a Swissie breeder friend just had one of her females do that a few weeks ago - she didn't realize she was such a strong chewer and she ended up with severe damage).
Oh thank you so much! We will stop by there sometime this weekend!
No. Collecting and possessing antler sheds in CO has specific rules and regulations. You can't just go out and pick them up. Possessing an antler shed suggests you may have killed a deer--and you have to prove you did or did NOT kill said deer and did or did NOT have a tag for the deer.
I would highly highly recommend against going out and just "collecting" sheds until you are familiar with the rules and regs in your area.
Don't worry, DH would love to go hunting and picking them up would be cheaper, but we're heading to the store today. Thanks for the heads up!
SOOOO.. got an antler today, perfect small enough size for my doxie. To say the least.. he is HORRIFIED of it. lol I gave it to him like I do anything else and he put his mouth around it and then dropped it and started backing away and then sniffing and backing away. I tried to hold n calm him down and then introduce it again. This time he started barking... and running away. lol.
I feel so bad. I really wanted him to love it. Any tips on making him calmer with it?
