What's the best way to keep bananas good longer?

Hi from TB multiples.  Just wondering if anyone has any tried and true method to make bananas last longer.  I know they sell special bags for produce, but it seems like such a waste to buy them.  Right now we just store them in the pantry.

  • Do you already separate them when you get them home (rather than keeping them joined together in a bunch)? That plus storing in a cool but not cold place are the only tricks I've found.

  • Its not much longer but I was told if you rip the banana from the "bunch" they don't rippen as fast as if they were kept in the bunch. I've noticed this only helps keep them for only a couple days longer though.

  • I keep mine in the fridge. The skin gets dark and "ripe" looking but the actual fruit is still young.

  • My sister's mother-in-law told me to rip them apart and then store them in a plastic tupperware container. It works like a charm.

  • Thanks, I'll definitely try separating them and putting them in the fridge.  I'm trying to cut back on our trips to the sotre (to cut down on impulse buys) so my goal is to get 2w worth so I can go just 2x/month.
  • I've used Debbie Meyer Green Bags before, and I think they might've kept the bananas good a bit longer....I hardly ever eat bananas though so I'm having trouble remembering.

There's a lot of debate about the green bags--some people think they're great and others think they don't do anything. I think they keep my vegetables longer at least.

I'm not a big fan of bananas either, but my kids go crazy for them, especially the twins, they can tear through 4+ in a day if I'd let them.

  • Probably not exactly what you're looking for but I actually love to freeze bananas when they're very ripe. I peel them and cut them in pieces before freezing. I use them for all my smoothies. No ice needed.
