catholic or those that follow lent-
what are you doing, giving up etc...
Kieran is giving up marshmallows, his favorite treat-
I don't know what I will do- I was contemplating the internet, but I don't think I am strong enough, lol!

Re: catholic or those that follow lent-
there's ZERO chance I could stay away from the internet! LOL
Back when I was still a Catholic I gave up a few different things:
wine one year (that was hard lol), sweets, TV (not hard at all for me, I'm not a huge TV watcher).
I also knew people who instead of giving something up made a commitment to volunteering weekly at the soup kitchen or doing other things that were "selfless" but contributed in a positive way to people who needed help.
Same here! LOL
I could never ever ever give up the internet.
I was thinking of trying to stop picking at my cuticles, such a horrible habit
The bolded makes a LOT more sense to me than giving up soda or chocolate or whatever. Actually helping people seems a lot more productive. Just saying.
last year i gave up "message boards during the day", lol. I knew that going totally cold turkey was never going to happen - so i gave myself night time, and also FB... and I did well and it was certainly a lesson for me.
This year I think i'm going to do 40 bags in 40 days... try to get rid of a bag of "stuff" each day... clutter, old clothes, old toys, etc. To help me get more organized in this house. It won't be easy on days I work- but I figure I can just take 15 minutes each day to clean out a drawer or go throguh some toys, etc, and donate or toss everything.
We're also making sure we go to church during lent. We've been bad lately b/c of a lot of issues... and we know we need to make more of an effort to go weekly- at least get Griffin there each week (since the twins are terrors in church at this age).
I agree that it's a great idea and certainly productive, but I don't think giving up something is bad either. It's supposed to be about sacrifice and if it's something that gives you pleasure/makes you happy then it is a sacrifice even if it seems silly.
Well, we were discussing it, cause Kieran had to fill out his paper for school-
I am doing the house thing- I am getting rid of any items not touched since Jan. 1- but wanted to do something that is more day to day- and it is hard for me to do something extra that would require a sitter since this is Mike's busy season and he is not available to really help at all. I was thinking of doing something with Kieran each week- maybe visit a nursing home or something-

That sounds really great. I bet the Veterans Home in Paramus would be into that too. These poor veterans get so little vistors. My grandfather lived there and my mom went every night just to hang with him and the other men (and few women).
ooh good to know- i would totally do something for veterans and Kieran would like to do this as well. He loves to make people happy and knows about my dad, Mike's dad, my friend and his cousin that were/are military- and what they did/do for our country.

I plan to give up the internet except for essentials (shopping!). I also plan to say thanks for all the blessings in my life daily.
My daughter is planning to add a fruit to her day every day. This is a huge "sacrifice" on her part.
I teach the kids not to give something up but to do something extra nice, include a new student, help out our older neighbor, be kinder to a sibling etc.
