Anxiety...

Any tips? It's been kicking my butt hard and heavy this week... Can't seem to calm down. Any tips???

Re: Anxiety...

  • Anxiety about life?

You need to learn skills that will calm you down.  I have three: a walk, a shower and deep breaths.  Deep breaths get me to focus and calm down my breathing.  A shower is the most relaxing place I can think of.  A walk distracts me from what is going on and if I feel okay walking, then I know the problem isn't too serious.

But, these are the skills that work for me.  It takes trial and error to identify what will work for you.  They were developed through a bout of agoraphobia (aka - serious anxiety that didn't allow me to leave the house) when I was nine.  They work and I have used them my whole life.  I'm only saying that because coping skills will help even with the most egregious anxiety.

Many people will recommend counseling.  I was a child when I did it and it wasn't too helpful for me, but I actively undermined the sessions.  Counseling is a personal choice.  Drugs are also an option, but I feel that they are a last resort choice.  However, I understand my feelings on that are somewhat unpopular.

Good luck!  Anxiety is tough, but you can learn to control it very well.  No one these days would ever know I had/have a problem.

  • Anxiety in general, or bonafide anxiety attacks?

General anxiety- find a hobby that you LOVE, exercise, volunteer to keep your life in perspective, eat well, try to get enough sleep, etc?

Anxiety attacks/ anxiety disorders- see your doctor. I would have gone nuts if I hadn't! I have a pretty serious anxiety disorder that's currently managed pretty well with yoga, meditation, occasional counseling and Xanax when all else fails :-/
