We had thought he was on the mend, but once his feedings starting increasing in preparation for coming home his liver couldn't keep up with digesting and detoxifying protein. We switched to a low-protein diet, but he developed hepatic encephalopathy with each feeding... staggering/falling/etc. that would go away as the food left his system. We were going to switch to one last type of food, but got a call around 1am this morning that his breathing had changed, that he had stopped getting up to use the litter box, and that his body had just worn itself out.
I *know* this was caused by the improper use of the anti-parasitic... and we were fighting a losing battle. The drug has a half life of 8 days, meaning yesterday when he passed, even if his liver has been detoxifying at 100% (which there's no way it was) there was likely more than 25% of the toxic drug circulating in his body.
Necropsy is tomorrow first thing in the morning.... Poor baby.
