French Basque Country?

Anyone been? We're thinking of going to Bayonne, St. Jean de Luz & St. Jean Pied du Port (sp?) before crossing over into Spain to see San Sebastian & Pamplona for the running of the bulls in July.

Re: French Basque Country?

  • We did that drive last July for San Fermin too.   St jean d luc was my favorite on the French side.  If its not too off your route, I'd also recommend a night in st Emilion.

We opted out of actual Pamplona (had our dog and navigating massive crowds w a setter sucks).  But loved San S and the surrounding countryside.   Crazy beautiful!

  • My time in Basque Country has been on the Spanish side, but since I see you are going to San Sebastian, I had to pop in and recommend Guernica. It's lovely and there is a surprising amount to do given its size--the museum of peace, the Basque history museum, the Vizcaya parliament with an absolutely stunning stained glass ceiling, the market, a sculpture garden with Chillada, etc. And obviously the historical significance makes it particularly worth a visit.

It's a quick drive from San Sebastian and very lovely. If you liked, you could continue on toward Bermeo for some really stunning scenery and sea views.

    Enjoy!

  • Glad to see IN representing! I almost posted this on that board and came here instead. Silly me!

  • I stayed with friends in St. Jean de Luz and it was wonderful. Very beautiful, for sure. I also recommend Biarritz for a little more built up of a place. San Sebastian is also a must see. We drove to Pamplona for the corridas, and it was insane. I'd never do it again, though the one time was ok. If you go, I recommend going at night, staying up all night there and seeing the running in the morning, then getting out. Hotels are probably already sold out.

  • butting in with San Fermin advice. we did the festival last year....highly recommend not staying in pamplona. we rented a dirt cheap room there and it was very very loud (fun, but you are not getting sleep while in pamplona is that is a huge problem for you).

try to rent a balcony for one morning to watch the run. we did this and it was so totally worth it. if you are there for more than one run, head to the bull ring very early. people line up and rush in once the doors open for seats. you then watch the bulls run into the ring (the ring goes from completely empty to full of runners in about 30 secs). after that they send in some baby bulls to run after spectactors (one of the strangest things i have ever seen....we didn't want to see a real bullfight so we did this).

San Fermin makes Mardi Gras look like tea party. be prepared for all night drinking, dancing and pure celebration. it is awesome. Once you come across a Pena band (and you will, just look for the tuba!) follow one through out the city. we dance with strangers pouring us sangria for two hours straight.
