Second cat - update

Thanks for your responses in my OP about choosing a second cat: http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/63437305.aspx

Here's who we came home with, a one year old girl:  http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c75/mbc106/6ff74065.jpg

Current Cat is pissy about it but he'll get over it. We have her shut in the spare bedroom. He's been growling at the door but less so today than last night.

New Cat has bad dandruff. Any tips?

Re: Second cat - update

  • Awww.  She looks like a baby version of my cat (in siggy).  We've never had any dandruff issues, but I have a girlfriend who says that fish oil helps her cat.  She just breaks open the capsule and squeezes it on kitty's food.  I'd want to check with a vet first to be sure it is just dandruff and not something more serious.  I understand that certain types of mites can disguise themselves as dandruff.
    No Siggy

  • I have no advice but congratulations!  She's beautiful.  Black cats are awesome :)

This, it could possibly be another skin issue. If it is dandruff, what food are you planning to feed? A high quality or grain free food might help improve her skin condition (wellness, taste of the wild, evo, acana, etc).

    Congrats, she is beautiful!

  • Congrats on your new addition!  If the cat was eating crappy food before and will be eating better food now, that will likely help the dandruff. Maybe some light brushing will also help spread the natural oils? It's supposed to work for human hair so maybe cats too? :-)

  • Oh, she is just gorgeous!  When we went to the shelter 6 years ago I picked out a little black mama cat just like her, but we ended up going home with two big fluffy grey/white boys.  She is such a petite little thing!

Good food could help solve the dandruff issue, as long as it's not mites or something like that.

  • Thanks for the input!

I don't know what she was eating at the shelter, but we have been giving her Wellness (what we feed Pal, our first cat) and she's been gobbling it up.

She's five pounds and apparently 14 months old. We named her Midge.

Pal stopped hissing at the door today and they were sticking their paws under the door at each other. I opened it a crack so they could see each other but then he started hissing and growling again. Baby steps!

  • If any of you are still reading this ... We let them go face to face today. They are playing and chasing each other with no hissing :) The little one is actually chasing the big one! And her coat looks a whole lot better, I guess from the better food and from us petting her.

I'm so relieved that they seem to be getting along. Thanks for your advice.
