Dachshund scared of new antler toy..

I posted about this under my other thread "Dachshund chipmunk" but wasn't sure how many of you were still checking it.

We went and got a size appropriate antler for our mini dachshund, Dexter today and when I presented it to him like I do anything else he FREAKED out. He's horrified of it. At first he put his mouth on it and then dropped it..

Then he started sniffing it and backing up a couple times and then started barking and running away.

He won't go near it now. How do I make him more comfortable with it?

Re: Dachshund scared of new antler toy..

  • Give him a little time. This is all new to him.

You could smear some peanut butter on it if it seems like he is still scared of it.

  • I know I shouldn't laugh, but I LOVE the description! Sounds like what Collins does with the vacuum.

I agree with PP to give him time and maybe a bit of PB on it to make it extra scrumptious.

It's ok.. it's cracking me up.. DH is saying he's a wuss in other terms.. lol

We don't do human food, so I'm not sure about the PB but maybe we'll try it.

    Thanks ladies!

  • Aw, at least he's just wee!

Our 100+ lb Newf got a new bone the other day. I suspect it was from a dinosaur. I truly expected her to be thrilled. It cost me my first born, bought from a fancy-shpancy all natural dog boutique (that's mean...they're a great place...if a little...over the top) and put it down in front of her and she sniffed it. Backed up. Worked herself up to sniffing it again. Backed up faster. Circled it from a distance for half an hour or so. Finally worked herself up to getting close to it, grabbed it and immediately dug the biggest hole you've ever seen and buried it.

Some day, they're going to excavate our yard and wonder what sort of slaughterhouse we were running!

OMG I was seriously laughing so HARD while reading that!! I think we saw some bones like what you were describing, bigger than our dog actually. I put the PB on it like PP's suggested he licked it all off and now he's loving it!

What kind of dog do you have? Newf? Not a big dog buff.. haha

  • Glad he's discovered the antler. It will be good for his teeth especially if food is sticking in them. Also as far as "human" food, it's not bad to give your dog real food as a supplement or treat. It just matters what kind. Lily gets all kinds of stuff frozen in her kongs (apples, bananas, peanut butter, cottage cheese, yogurt, sweet potatoes and more). You want to be sure the food is dog safe and balanced. Green beans and carrots (raw) make great low calorie snacks for training as well. Max enjoyed all these things before he got sick. He can no longer have any treats or non-treated food, so Kongs are harder for him. He does like the antler and hard Nylabone..

I love the picture of Max in your siggy! You said he's sick, with what? :( I hope everything is ok! I know when Dex was sick in the beginning we were heart broken!

It wasn't necessarily that we thought "human" food was bad for him, but we just didn't want to get him into a habit of wanting things we have on our plate. haha

side note: Today I found his little beak in an empty chip bag DH left on the coffee table.. it was cracking me up.. he couldn't get it off.. all the while I'm thinking.. thats what you get for being greedy little baby. lol

  • Once he figures out what it is he'll play with it and chew on it. If he has other things that he chews on or things that he's not supposed to chew on try giving him it when hes doing it to teach him that its ok for him to chew on it. Occasionally we'll put a little beef stock on our pups antler as a treat.

. Max is 11 years old and was poorly bred. I have a feeling his previous owners got him from a pet store (sad). Anyway, a year ago he developed Exocrine Pancreatic Enzyme (EPI). He pancreas does not function at all and all his food has to be treated with special enzymes. He'll be on antibiotics and bi-weekly B-12 shots for life. Other than all that, he's perfect (mostly).

Well he's absolutely adorable and I totally respect your dedication!

  • KD - I don't know if you saw my other post, but I wanted to sincerely apologize for losing it on you. I am glad you were just venting...I really thought you were serious. I think it just hit a chord because my parents recently adopted a dachshund that was neglected and emaciated (and you know how easy it is for those little weenies to put on weight!). I say, that in a nice way, I love my parents' dog. Anyhow, I'm sorry. I get so many e-mails that were similar to your post (and they were not just venting) and it really got to me. Glad you are sticking around.

You will forever be my best friend. I can almost feel our hugs. I will ensure everyone will know (now and in the future) what a genuine, kind, loving person you were...I already miss your laughter and our daily conversations. I love you, Samantha. May 20, 1983- February 20, 2012

I did, just forgot about responding earlier.. I appreciate the apology. I understand how it home for lots of the posters and I should have sat back and thought about things before I posted. I was just really frustrated and DH and I were arguing about potty training and I was at my wits end.

We talked about it later though and we both love our little guy. He brings a smile to our faces all day long. Right now he's napping and I can't help but think how sweet he looks! : )

...and I should have realized some people just vent! Just wanted to ensure you saw that so there is no tension. At least we are mature enough as adults to admit our mistakes and move on...thanks for understanding.

I've worked through worse and I will work through this. It is my obligation and commitment to him and any pet I have to find a solution. It is not always quick or easy or sometimes even possible, but you keep looking.

    I'm glad you're seeing that.
  • I just wanted to address the part about human food...it's all in how you give it to them. Sure, if you feed them from your plate or while you're eating, that would encourage begging. But if you do it away from the table, not during your meal time, in a Kong or as a treat, it should work out. GL.

  • Maybe put it away for a few days and take it back out?

Leave it alone and see if he warms up to it?

My pit bull mix is a strange duck, she will be so weird and indifferent to a toy, then bam! One day she is obsessively in love with the toy.

This has not been my experience. My dog will bed for and counter surf only food items she has been given previously in kongs or as treats- yogurt, PB, carrots, ice, etc.

Sorry, guess it's not universally successful. My dog is not super food motivated but there are things like peanut butter that she really likes. However, she doesn't bother me while I am eating it b/c she knows I will not give it to her then. Maybe it would not work if she was more into food.

Haha We have never given Dexter "human food" not even PB until I put it on the antler to entice him. He still tries to get everything we eat. Always hanging around the kitchen when I'm cooking hoping I drop a crumb, but I never do because I'm watching him. lol That's why we don't want to give him human food. I can just imagine how nuts he'd go if I gave him PB a lot.. I know for sure he'd be after my sandwich.. he was before.. lol

  • He's a food motivated doxie.  In my opinion its not going to matter what you do, he'll want food.  Max can't ever have treats or food outside of his meals, but he still "hoovers" the floor looking for crumbs.

A good thing to work on teaching him is "leave it."   This will come in handy if you drop food while cooking so that he doesn't snatch it up.  Mine will not touch anything that hits the floor.  Oh they want to, but they don't.  If its something that I would let them have I pick it up, put it on the counter and wait a while before giving it and they have to do something for it (NILIF).   Well that last part applies to Lily since Max can't have anything.
