What is a good "starter fish"? Cod or halibut?

I'm trying to get myself to like fish. I found a recipe that looks yummy and it called for halibut but I ended buying 2 filets of both halibut and cod each and will make the recipe with all 4 filets. Should I attempt to eat the cod or halibut? In other words, which is less "fishy" tasting and a good starter fish?

Re: What is a good "starter fish"? Cod or halibut?

  • If you hadn't already bought it I'd say buy the cod, simply because halibut (at least by me) is crazy expensive. Like more expensive than beef tenderloin filet. Insane. I've been wanting to try it but I can't afford it!

That being said, halibut and cod are both going to be a nice, mild white fish. What recipe are you making?

  • My sister didn't always like fish. Now that she likes it more, she usually sticks to tilapia and cod. Tilapia is softer than cod but the flavor is very mild. I also find it to be more versatile. She also really likes swordfish but it's pretty high in mercury and mahi mahi, which I have never seen anywhere but in a restaurant.

  • This is the recipe I'm going to try tomorrow. Seems to be quite popular with bloggers.

  • This looks yummy! Tilapia would be a great starter fish for this. It is very mild and goes great with almost any recipe. I love seafood, but personally cod isnt a favorite of mine. You may be able to find tilapia filets that are a little thicker too which may make them easier to work with.

  • I like cod, rockfish, hake or hailbut. I don't often cook fish because SO HATES all seafood. Living in Boston, every good restaurant usually has one or two good seafood dishes, so I often order fish when we go out.

  • We eat a lot of tilapia so yummy and easy to make!

I just tried to buy some and it was $23 a pound! I asked the guy why and he said that Halibut get fished (? caught?) in late spring/early summer so we are at the end of the year, the stock is being depleted, and therefore is really expensive. He said, "Save your blog post for the summer!"

Geesh, didn't know I was being so obvious!

  • I had rockfish for the first time recently and it was very good!
