Puppy v. cat problem solving

Hey everyone,

We have had our pup for one week now (her name is Winnie) and everything is going pretty well. She is doing great with the crate  and for the most part housetraining is going well too. She is good and sweet and we love her. However we have an unusual cat problem. Marshmallow the cat is extremely food motivated and since we are treating Winnie often for peeing/pooping etc. Marshmallow has decided to follow Winnie's every move. This leads Winnie to get excited and bark at her and sometimes pounce. But also this is causing the majority of her accidents I think when she's excited whatever is in her bladder just lets go.  Does anyone have any thoughts? Of course we can keep them separated but that would be an unfortunate permanent solution.

Thanks!

Re: Puppy v. cat problem solving

  • My response to the same problem was to have whoever else was around reward the pups and to train and reward the cat myself at the same time and vice versa. My cat now knows Sit, Stay, Up, Lay Down, and we're working on Shake. Great if you have a smart, food motivated cat. When Leah got what she wanted, she left Sam and Nala alone much more, and I didn't have to give her unearned treats and start a bad habit.

  • Dear DawnMarie,

Thanks so much for the advice! We have done clicker work with her and it's a good idea to do some more. She's just so brazen around the dog! She stole her pig's ear right from her last night! So far today has gone better, with no cat-induced peeing. Knock on wood.

    Thanks again,
