Help with planning DH's 40th b-day - special circunstances

The good news: we are moving in to a great house, perfect for entertaining.

The challange: I'll be 8 months pregnant with #1.

As for giving DH a gift in lieu of a party - that isn't going to work. There is nothing he wants or needs that he won't just go out and buy himself.  Except for a particular car but that isn't within budget.  We won't take a trip b/c pregnant or not, we've been to 17 countries and travel for us is just something we do.  Well, parties are too, but this can be extra special.

Only thing is, how to make it extra special?

Have a band?  Catered?  Theme or no? Monster size cheese cake (DH's fav dessert)?  Other ideas?  I need help!

Budget is ~$1500, but I could possibly stretch that.  He is a casual kind of guy, though.  I just would like for it to stand apart from all other backyard/pool parties that we get enjoy.

  • Is there something besides cheesecake that he loves?  A wine specialist to do a tasting, a sushi maker, an entertainer, an ice luge for shots (that wouldn't be much fun for you though).
  • Is there any place that you could rent out in your budget?  Being that pregnant and moving, I wouldn't feel up to all of the preparations and clean up involved.

This. The right environment can make a party more "special" without doing too much in the way of food/decor/etc.
