Puppy Wetting in Sleep - Help!

My hubby and I have just recently added a new furbaby to our home and we couldn't be happier! However I have started to get worried because she wets herself when she sleeps. This is my third dog & I have never experienced this before. She's a lab mix about 12 weeks old (got her from a shelter so we're not completely sure) and is house trained. She has no accidents as long as we take her out regularly. However even if she has just been out, if she takes a nap she often still wets her self.

We took her to the vet 3 weeks ago and explained. The vet said it could be a UTI and gave her meds. We thought she was getting better, but now she has finished all the meds & is still having problems.

So now I'm wondering - Did the meds just not completely take care of it? Did we just think it was getting better because that's what we were hoping for? Does she just need time for her muscles and bladder control to get stronger? Or could she have a medical condition? We are planning on making another appointment, but if anyone has any advice or experience with this, we would really appreciate your help!

Re: Puppy Wetting in Sleep - Help!

  • Did your vet not test her urine?  My vet has only just given us meds based on symptoms once and because we are not new to UTIs with our dog.  I'm kind of surprised if they didn't actually check her urine.

I've heard that some female dogs can have problems with leakage. There is a med to help with it if that's the case.  I'd take her back to the vet and have them actually check her urine.
  • No the vet did not check her urine. I did wonder about that, (especially since she's a new vet for us - we just moved from OH to NC) but since I have had 2 other female dogs that have dealt with UTI's, I really thought that's what was wrong based on her symptoms. Especially since she's young and was still in the potty training phase, I know UTI's aren't an uncommon problem.

However since it hasn't stopped, that's what's got me thinking it may be something else.

  • This may not be your next step, because I sincerely hope you're able to find the cause of this, but the med that pp mentioned is called Proin ("pro-in").  We had a greyhound foster who was left incontinent after a series of antibiotic-resistant UTIs (she also wet in her sleep), and the Proin was absolutely a life saver for her.  And it's extremely affordable.

My Dane is on this as well, and it has done wonders for her.  From what I understand, it's a common issue is females who have been fixed.  I wouldn't worry too much, but maybe go ahead and try the proin if they can get a small enough dose for a puppy. I actually give Bella about 2/3 of the dose that the vet suggested, and she's doing great on it.
