How can I make my soup less spicy

I made black bean soup for H, only it's a little too spicy for his taste (I love it). Is there a simple way to tone it down? Should I just add more vegetable stock?

Re: How can I make my soup less spicy

  • you could add a little more stock, but can you also serve it with sour cream? I love sour cream with black bean soup, and it should mask some of the spice.
  • Could you cook diced potatoes in a skillet and add those? Let the potatoes get browned but cook them to just shy of done. Add them to the black bean soup and simmer until the potatoes are tender.

My guess would be to cook the raw potatoes in the soup, so they will absorb some of the seasoning.  You could always remove the potatoes and throw them out if you don't really want their addition.

  • I had no idea there were so many different things to do to tone down too spicy. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_can_you_do_to_tone_it_down_if_you_make_your_chili_too_spicy

  • I usually add tomatoes to make something less spicy - but the tomato soup I made this week was so spicy and I had no tomatoes so I stirred some cream in.  I would think the vegetable stock wouldn't fight the spice, but a milk product will.
