Update/de-lurk + not sure how to make myself go to gym

Hi Ladies!! You'll be happy to know I am not going to call myself fat this time! I've gone from 213 to 207 lbs. and, although unrelated, finally found a mobile browser that will let my awful phone post here (yay, Opera!). I'm hitting a bit of a roadblock, and maybe the dietician will be able to help, but in the meantime - how do you stay motivated to go to the gym? Any tips or tricks or ways to horrify myself into going? I find that after I go, which isn't as often as I should, I'm glad I did, but making myself do it in the first place is a challenge. I think it's really slowing down my progress because I keep blowing off planned workouts.

  • Last time I said I was 209, but it turns out our scale was set to start at -4. DH apparently cheated when we last weighed ourselves and never reset it. *eyeroll*

  • No one is going to be able to give you any magic formula.  You just need to go.  It's that simple (not easy-simple).

When I had my big weight loss and realization it was finally being sick of where I was and tired of hearing my own excuses... I decided right then and there that I was going to do this and I did.

If you really can't do it on your own hire a personal training for 6 weeks to get started- those are $$ so you won't blow them off.  It might be expensive but it's a hellofa lot cheeper than all the problems that come with being over weight.

     Good luck.

  • I go in the morning before work and just get it over with. I can come up with way too many excuses to not go after work.

  • do you take any classes? i find that when i sign up for a class that i really enjoy, i feel more committed to the days they have the class then when i am going to just work out/run.

also i go w. my dh and neighbors so that keeps me motivated when i get texts/calls from them about meeting them there. can you find a gym "buddy"?

good luck!! it sounds like you are doing great!!!

  • If gym workouts aren't something you really like, what about some other options?  I spent more $$ on gyms over the years & I never went because really, I just don't like gyms. Do you like to dance?  What about Zumba or something like that?  Pilates or yoga are also wonderful for your core.  If you like to be outside, what about doing some stairs or something at a local stadium?  There are LOTS of options outside of a gym!
  • I agree with getting involved in some classes.  I usually work out in the morning but there are some days that I can't work out until the evening.  On those days it's sooooo easy for me to say that I'll leave in 5 minutes...ok, 5 more minutes...ok, I'll just read this and go...and so on.  If I know my class starts at 5:30 then I get my butt in gear to be there by 5:30 with less excuses.  Once I got into a routine of going to the gym, then the excuses slipped away and I enjoy my time there and look forward to going!

  • When I really committed to making fitness a part of my daily life, group fitness classes were the best way for me to get to the gym. I enjoy the classes, they become part of your routine, and there is more accountability.

As pp said, though, it's not easy but it's simple: just go. Hopefully, finding excuses not to go will morph into finding excuses to be there!

  • You just need to do it.  I don't always love working out, but I just view it as another thing I have to do to be a responsible adult, like brushing my teeth and paying taxes.  I don't LOVE doing those things either, but the temporary annoyance of doing them is better than the consequences of NOT doing them.

This, totally!  I really don't like the gym very much.  I get bored with it pretty quickly and would rather do almost anything outdoors, which is what I do all spring, summer and fall.  In the winter, though, I join the gym because I'm a sissy and will not work out outside if it's below 55 or so.  So I take yoga and zumba classes at the gym and enjoy their heated pool and steam room for the winter months.  I really love those classes and the amenities, and I also know it's only for a few months, so I go a lot and really enjoy it.

The rest of the year, I don't really struggle with motivation because I want to get in all the rollerblading and bicycling I can before winter.  You just have to find the things you love to do, and then switch it up enough that you actually look forward to your workouts.

  • Find something that you enjoy.  Going to the gym without a plan is hard.  Find a friend to keep you accountable, pay a trainer, start walking the dog, or sign up for a 5K.  You have to figure out what motivates you.  Personally goals work really well.  If I have a race to train for I work out much harder than when I don't have a goal.  If I am lifting I push myself more in a class or when working with a trainer.  Try different things and figure out what works well for you.
  • I don't like the gym. I rather be outside. I hate the cold and will still go out in the cold to exercise. Find something you enjoy. On the days I simple 'don't want to go out and exercise'. I go. Period. I just get dressed and drag myself out the door. By the time I leave and get started I'm happy that I did.

You need to find something that you love and enjoy. Try doing stuff outdoors to see if you enjoy it, maybe join a running or hiking group if you need others to motivate you. Maybe take some classes at the gym, you may enjoy that more.

    This.

If I had to go to a gym even a couple of times/week to work out, I'd never do anything.  I hate packing my stuff, driving over there, dealing with the locker rooms and showers (or having to come home for that), etc.

So I work out at home.  It means I don't have to allot as much time because there's no travel.  I can do what I want.  I've got a small collection of DVDs, and a bunch of different work outs written down that I've found on line.  Since it's so much easier/more convenient for me I find that I work out at least six days each week, and more than that, I look forward to it and don't need a whole lot of motivation.  I found that it wasn't a matter of not being motivated to work out, it was not being motivated to work out *at the gym*.  At home, I don't have that problem.  Good luck!

  • I think maybe a lot of you are right about this - the gym itself might be the problem. I hate all the hassle of it. I live in Pittsburgh, however, and on a mountain, so winter here is not a great outdoor time, and I hate running. Biking might be a good solution for me, I'll look into a good bike rack! :)

  • I agree with everyone else. I am not one of those people who just looovveeee to workout. But I do it because I know that I will feel good after, I want to lose weight, and I want to be healthy. I know that if I give myself an out, I take it. Like if I say "I'm going to get up and go to the gym before work, but if I over sleep, I'll go after" I don't go at all. I have a calender on my refrigerator and mark my workouts for the week and that is that.

  • I agree with pp's about going to a class. Esp if you go with a friend! If i agree to meet someone there, I'm much more likely to go.

  • Don't go to the gym if it's not your thing, find what is your 'thing'.

I will go to the gym maybe 2-3 times a week, that's my limit.  But, two other days I do a water aerobics class and the other days I go and walk 3 miles at the mall

it took me a long time to figure out what I was willing to do and would enjoy doing, its much better than forcing myself to go to the gym every day.

    good luck!

This. My "thing" is yoga. I do other exercise to mix things up but I love yoga and it has transformed my body, so that's what I do.

But there's no magic formula for motivation. You really do just have to do it - make yourself go, regardless of whether you want to or feel motivated.
