WWND? Bridesmaid Dress Situation

I am a BM in my friend's wedding, and per her request, I need to order my dress before Feb is over. The wedding is Labor Day weekend and there is a chance I could be pregnant by then with a sizable bump. But then again, I might not be. The way I see it, I can a) get my normal size and not worry about it, b) get a much bigger size and take it in or c) If possible, buy my normal size but order extra fabric so that the dress can be made bigger if necessary.

I'm not sure if option C is something that could really happen, I'll have to ask them at David's bridal. Option A might be a big risk to take. And option B might be the best, but if I'm not pregnant by Sept, I'll be super annoyed to have to deal with tailoring a humungous dress.

I should add that yes-- I DO want to be in my friend's wedding. She is a wonderful friend and I'm excited about being there. She knows that I might be pregnant and is supportive of whatever size I buy, as long as I buy it by her deadline, haha.

Re: WWND? Bridesmaid Dress Situation

  • That's ironic. I'm having BM dress drama right now too. My friend wants long dresses on the beach in Mexico in July. All BM said oh hell to the no, but my friend keeps sending us pics of long dresses. We keep responding "we'd rather wear short." and then she gets frustrated. Oh well. If she really wants the long dress, stop asking us and just tell us which one we need to order. ;)

Okay for your issue though. I'd go with C.

  • I say C too.  Just order in your regular size.  That way you won't have the huge dress as a nasty reminder if things don't work out, but if all goes according to plan, you'll be more happy to spend the money to get the dress altered than you've ever been to spend money in your entire life!
  • I have the same issue as you.  I am in a wedding in at the end of October and I am kinda torn on what size to order, although I still have a few months to weigh out my decision before I HAVE to order the dress.  I really don't know what to do.  But with my luck I am worrying about something that will be a non issue :

I have my fingers crossed that soon you will be stressing about how you are going to fit into your BM dress.  I hope you are HUGE by the wedding :P

  • I need to ask David's if option C is possible. I have a feeling it won't be and I'll have to do B.
  • What does the dress look like? Do you have a link to it?

I know the last 2 weddings I have been in, my bridesmaid dresses were empire waist and I can actually still fit in them, albeit snugly, even at 6 months.  Certain cuts of dresses will probably be fine so I would order in your size or maybe ONE size up at the most.

  • I don't know if David's Bridal still does this, but I was in a wedding in Oct 2010 and didn't loose the weight I wanted so my dress was too small.  They let me exchange it for the next size up.  You can always check out that too.

That style looks a bit forgiving.  I'd order up one size and call it a day.  For a first time pregnancy, even a 5 or 6 month bump probably won't be too big by then.  I know I got huge near the end, but with DD I was still wearing my pre-pregnancy pants at that stage.

  • Cool, thanks Kendra!
  • Yep, I agree.  With that higher waist it definitely is more forgiving.  I would order a size up like Kendra said.  You are so petite as it is that even if you were 6 months preggo, I think you would be fine.
  • Great, thanks! Hopefully it will all work out.
  • I just had to deal with this issue.  Bought the bm dress in November, got pregnant in January.  Luckily, we bought the dresses from Nordstroms so I was able to return it for two sizes up (wanted to play safe, not knowing exactly how large I will be in May).  I figure you can always alter in and get it taken in, but making it bigger isn't exactly much of an option.  I would go with option b.

  • Also, keep in mind that it's not just the waist area that gets bigger.  I am already up a cup size at 8w.
