Cut on the pad of paw

Tonight when my dog finished running his laps in the mud I was cleaning his paws and he has a straight cut to one his back paws, right on the edge of the pad.  It's about 1/2" long, and was bleeding pretty well.  I cleaned it out really well with water and covered it with neosporin and gauze with a wrap around it to hold pressure. This was about 5-10 minutes ago.  I can't tell how deep it is.  He's not favoring his paw or fooling with the dressing - just acting like himself, bouncing around and chewing on his toys and bone.  My plan is to watch it-and his behavior-and hit up the vet right when they open in the AM. Does that sound Ok??

Re: Cut on the pad of paw

  • Sounds like you are on the right track.

One of our dogs cut the hell out of her pad last year, and we were only able to clean it out and keep antibiotic ointment on it (stitches wouldn't have stayed).

You can use a baby sock to help keep it clean and to keep him from messing with the bandage.

  • sound about right.

I've taped socks onto paws...depending on the pet and hisher likelyhood f eating said socks.

and if you happen to have 'bag-balm' lying around, I'd use that.  But if you don't (most people dont' :)), neosporin is a good stsep 1.

  • Thanks for the replies & suggestions.  Ended up calling the emergency vet and they said same things you guys said - keep it dressed, etc. and i'll take him to the vet in the morn.
  • I've had that happen before and keeping a bandage on a paw is pretty impossible--I ended up using the self adhesive wrap for humans over gauze and keep it tight enough to stay on (you should be able to get a finger or two inside of it so it isn't too tight).  And be sure to use a big enough piece of it, or it'll fall off anyway.  Good luck.
