BR: vaginal birth followed by c/s?

Am I the only one here so far who has had both? Just curious and had a couple of questions if anyone else has as well. Can't think of anyone off the top of my head though...

Re: BR: vaginal birth followed by c/s?

  • I had 2 c/s..... but how is your recovery from the c/s going???  I am sure you are feeling better than being 36 pg with twins!!

Oh my goodness, I felt *instant* relief as soon as they pulled A out! And then when D came out it was like "ahhhhhh"... haha.

Recovery is going well. The first couple of days were really rough and I wanted to die. I had the worst gas pains ever- like into my shoulders and back and it was terrible. Plus we could not find the right combination of pain meds and it was bad. My vaginal recovery with Nolan was worse overall than this has been- but he was big, sunny side up, vacuum assisted, episiotomy, and a few tears... SO I guess that's to be expected, lol.  Once I was able to get my pain under control at the hospital, I felt pretty good this time around. (TMI warning) My only concern (which is the reason of this post) is my PP bleeding. It had considerably slowed down but has picked up again and is pretty heavy. I'm thinking it's because I'm now BFing both girls but I also passed a clot yesterday for the first time so I'm a little concerned. But overall, I can't complain! I am back to normal activity and lifting Nolan and everything with no pain so it was better than I expected! :)

  • I obviously haven't had that situation personally since I only have the one kid so far, but my aunt had twins and delivered the first vaginally and the second via c/s.  I always figured she deserved some kind of award for that.

ETA:  I now realize this had nothing to do with what you asked and I read your question wrong.  Sorry Tiff, I hope your recovery is easier by the day and over before you know it!

I think the changes in PP bleeding are pretty normal with a c/s recovery.  I, of course, have never experienced a vaginal delivery so I don't have any first-hand comparisons, but I did ask my doctor about my bleeding because it wasn't what I had expected.  His response to me was that it's normal for it to wane to a lighter flow for a while and then come back, and that the PP bleeding commonly lasts longer than with a vaginal delivery.  For that reason, he doesn't even schedule the PP appointment for c/s moms until 10 weeks out, vs the 8 week PP appt. for vaginal delivery moms.

For me, I had heavy-to-medium bleeding for about 4 weeks, then it tapered down to almost nothing in the 5th week (and I got excited because I thought it was ending), but then it came back in full force on the 6th week and lasted for another 3.  I really noticed a difference in how heavy it was based on how much activity I had been doing as well, especially once I had thought it was slowing down for good.

  • PP bleeding with twins is different and is expected to be a lot heavier.  I bled for 6 weeks pp!  Plus I passed several larger than golf ball sized clots!  Ugh, it was so gross and I totally freaked out!  LOL.... my recovery from the twins was easier than with Abby but then again like you, I felt instant relief after they pulled them out!!
  • Ahhh, thanks for the reassurance ladies! :)
  • I had hardly any bleeding in the hospital... heavier when I got home. The doctor said it was because I was doing so much more that the bleeding increased. Mine also lasted a long time... spotting past my 6w PP appointment.

  • I didn't have a c/s but I had MAJOR PP bleeding.  So, don't know if this was your concern, but I don't necessarily think it's a unction of you having a c/s - kwim?

(TMI Alert) I passed huge clots - the largest was about the size of a baseball.   Anything over golf ball sized my doc wanted to know about.  I nded up havinga sonogram to see if there were any issues inside but the bleeding just ended up tapering off.
