I think my dog is eating too fast..Help?

So we gradually switched our dog's food to the Kirkland (CostCo) brand from Iams and he LOVES the new food and gobbles it up quickly.

Saturday was the first day of all new food after slow integration.  We took him to obedience class from 4-6 and he had some different types of treats there and when we took him home, we gave him only half the normal dinner portion due to all the treats.  He ate it quickly and burped A LOT.  Sunday morning, he had the food eaten in like 5 minutes and then within five minutes, burped then puked it up.  He ate at night and was fine.  Then again this morning, he ate quickly and started burping A LOT.

We feed him a bit under a cup a feeding twice a day.  He's a small dog, about 11 lbs. and about a year old for background.  He was always finnicky with the Iams and after reading reviews, we switched him because the CostCo brand had some good reviews.

Is he eating too quickly probably?  What can I do to slow down the eating?

Re: I think my dog is eating too fast..Help?

  • Have you tried making him work for his food? Stuffing into a Kong, Tug-a-Jug, or other food-dispensing toy?
  • Food dispensing toys are a good idea. You can also spread his food out on a cookie sheet or in a muffin tin as an easy fix.
  • Our pup eats 2 cups of food in under a minute...he is an English Bulldog and they gulp their food and don't chew it.  We put one of those balls in his bowl and it doesn't help.  I would say just watch him and make sure he isn't chokeing.  Good luck!
  • They make bowls specifically designed to slow a dog done while eating. This helped us when our Doberman was hogging down his food.

  • We've used one of the special bowls posted by pps, as well as using a lot of puzzle toys. We mostly use the puzzle toys because they have the added benefit of giving the dogs mental stimulation, which my dogs need.

Your dog is a papillon or papillon mix, am I remembering right? Those are very bright little dogs, and he's young too, so I bet he would LOVE a puzzle toy. My 15 lb. dog likes the Tricky Treat Ball. The Kong Wobbler is a great toy but make sure to get the small version (we have the full-size one and it is way too big and heavy for my little guy). We've also used and liked the tug a jug, but I'll warn you that the small sized one only dispenses small sized kibble. We had trouble using it with the kibble we buy.

    HTH! Have fun shopping! :)

  • My dog also eats way too fast.  I tried one of the slow eatter bowls and it didn't help.  What does help is a muffin pan.  I put a little in each pocket and it slows her down a lot.
  • You're feeding him 2 cups of food a day and he's 11 pounds? My dog is 18 pounds and doesn't even get a cup a day, somewhere a little over half. I don't know the brand so maybe that's within what they recommend, but that sounds like way too much.

  • When our dachshund ate too fast we spread his food into a 6 part muffin tin.  It slowed him way down because he had to go from one cup to the next.  Some use the cookie sheet method and that works great as well.  No need to buy a special bowl unless you want to.

I just wanted to say that I prefer the Kong Wobbler to the Tricky Treat ball as it is easier to fill with measured amounts and easier to clean as well. On hard surfaces it is louder though.

Oh I missed this.  That seems like a lot of food.  My 45 pounder gets 1 heaping cup 2x a day and she's high energy.  I'm wondering if the vomiting is because its too much food.

Oh wow, I missed that too. A full cup at each meal would be a lot for a little dog's tummy. Maybe double-check whether that's the right amount...if it is, maybe spread it out over three or four smaller meals or switch to a more calorie dense food.

Yes My Doberman gets 4c and my Yorkie gets 1/2c. 2c seems like a lot to me.

  • I'll have to re-look up the packaging for the food but I thought we had read it right.  Maybe it said a cup a day.  He is a Papillon mix! Thanks for remembering!  We have a busy buddy like this:  http://www.amazon.com/Premier-Buddy-Twist-Treat-Small/dp/B0002I0RLW/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1329789469&sr=8-6 (I hope it made it clicky..) for him and he loves that but it doesn't fit too much food.  I'll look up some of the other suggestions.

    Thank you!

ETA: You're all right.. I mis-read the instructions but luckily I haven't been over-feeding him for that long and he did have some weight to put on... A lesson learned here.

  • I'm trying to remember what your guy looks like - he's black and white right? If it's the dog I'm thinking of, he's adorable!

I saw your update and that's good that you figured it out now. The Iams could have been 2 cups a day - since it contains so many fillers, you have to feed a lot of it. With the better foods, you can feed much, much less.
