If you have made a DIY crib rail cover - thoughts on using buttons?

I'm making one because apparently my DS is part-beaver and chewed the crib rail to shreds.

I'm following this tutorial and am thinking about doing fun buttons instead of ties. I would make ~1.5-inch straps out of fabric that would come off the main cover on the back side, go underneath the rail and then come up to button on the main cover on the front.  I think it would be a cleaner look and possibly sturdier too.  Thoughts?

  • I think they don't do buttons, because they are a choking hazard. If he is chewing on everything there is a good chance he might try and eat a button.

  • Buttons are a choking hazard.  Don't underestimate a determined toddler.

ETA: I think velcro makes the most sense, and fwiw, I am not a particularly paranoid mom/grandmother....I just know what a bored kid on a mission is capable of doing. ;p

  • I would not do buttons either and I am by no means the paranoid police. Like at all. ;)

I have one that's velcro if you want that has an option. It's a very clean look too. I haven't put it on my crib yet but it was on my SILs for a long time and I loved how it looked.

  • I think it would look a lot nicer with buttons, just keep the buttons on the outside of the crib so LO cannot chew them

  • I was going to make one & use velcro, but now I'm going to just do one with fleece & tie it (like those fleece tie blankets.)  I think it'll be a lot easier.  Like this http://great2bkate.blogspot.com/2011/08/becoming-crafty-no-sew-crib-rail-guards.html

  • Hmm, good point.  The buttons would be on the front where he'd have to reach his arm over the top to get at them so I think there's a basically nil chance he could work one hard enough to get it off, but it's not something to add to my maternal catalog of worry.  Back to the original tutorial version I go!

  • I'm not paranoid either, but I would NOT use buttons. Not even if you put them on the outside. They could still easily reach them.

    I'm on team velcro.

  • I would just use Velcro.

See I don't know if it would normally bother me on the outside, but my kid's biggest trait is that she's super strong. She can already reacher over the side of her crib when I stand her up in it. I have no doubt she could grab a button on the outside.

  • NO on buttons.  Make ties to go around the rail. they are short enough that the baby can't strangle or anything.  Just be sure to measure out spacing due to the 'spindles'- my mom didn't do that when she made mine and a few were right where the spindle was so they tied funny.

The front rail of DD's crib (where the fabric guard wraps around) is at least 5" long on either side (it's a thick decorative wood piece) so there's no way to really turn the entire thing around. Especially if it's made so it wraps around tight enough. That's why I never thought the buttons would be a big deal.  She would probably never even know they were there to be honest.

And, DD was never a chewer and never really put anything in her mouth. Not saying every kid is like that, but I never really had this sort of worry when she was small.

  • She wouldn't need to turn it around, she could reach through the bars and up or over and down. Like the PP said, never underestimate a bored toddler.
  • Agreed my kid could easily pull them even on the outside. Everything goes in my kids mouth so unless you are there to supervise 24/7 I'd go Velcro.
  • So, I know this is an old post. But, I make crib rail covers with buttons. They are machine sewn and on the outside of the crib. My son could never reach the buttons let alone get them off. I checked them regularly but since I rarely removed them, the buttons never loosened. I also used very large buttons because you wouldn't really want a small button with something like that anyway. I also made the hole pretty tight so they couldn't easily be undone -- although, again my son never got to them anyway. It actually seems funny to me that people see a choking hazard on buttons that are on the outside of the crib, unreachable by the child, but not in the very long straps most people put on their covers. Just saying.... Anyway, you have to do what you feel comfortable with. Just wanted you to have a different perspective that has been tried out.
