s/o pets - insurance?

With all of the recent posts about pets having to have hospital stays, huge vet expenses, etc. It has got me wondering if we should invest in some pet insurance, especially with upcoming maternitiy leave (aka no income).

Did/do those of you that have had these kinds of events come up in the last year have insurance? Was the stuff that needed to be done covered? If you didn't have it, did you wish you had?

Whether you have had to use it or not, but have the insurance, Has it been worth it? How much do you pay a month and what company do you use?

Re: s/o pets - insurance?

  • The Pets board knows a lot about pet insurance.  I don't have it but I should.
  • We don't have any. I briefly looked into it when we adopted Miller, but the one I checked out, he was too old to qualify for. (He was 8 when we adopted him.)
  • I know my assistant has it and it helped tremendously through her 6YO lab's recent cancer bout.  Not sure how much she pays but I can find out the company if you like.

  • We don't have insurance but we will as soon as I get a job.  Harley has cost us thousands per year due to a puppyhood with parasites that has lead to lifelong GI issues and a crazy wacked out immune system : (  In the last 3 months, he's cost us $3000 and we're not done with treatment yet : (

I don't know brands or pricing or anything but I'm SURE we could have saved tons of money had we gotten it.

  • We have it through PetPlan. We've been happy with it, although I don't think it's cheap, exactly (I think it's about $500 a year for our 10 year old dog). Jasper was older when we adopted him, so we knew there would be expenses we'd need to cover, although thankfully so far it's only been a few emergency visits for things like eating stuff he shouldn't. They've reimbursed us everything we've submitted quickly and with no issues, so that's been very nice.

  • I also don't have it, but looked into it after our dog had to get a broken leg repaired at age three (to cost of around $3k).  At that time (6 years ago) we would have spent about $35 per month and couldn't use it for anything related to his current condition (broken bones), and sprains/ligament repairs (common in labs) were only covered up to around $500, and most cancer treatment only covered to about $1200, and we couldn't use it for most anything major for the first year.

Since routine vet costs are only about $150-$200/yr for us and not being able to use it for a major issue for a year seemed made it less useful for us.

I bet it's changed a lot in 6 years, though.

Are you united with the CCOKCs?

  • Someone just posted this question on Pets and there's a couple of good links posted.
  • I've always felt like it was a waste of money but, like pp said, maybe things have changed
