Would you say anything? If so, what? (Coworker related)

I take my lunch break in my cube every day. I have a door, so I close it and have my 1 hour to myself. Cube neighbor does the same thing. (Neither of us drive to work on a regular basis, so we typically don't leave the office.)

Every day, without fail, she blows her nose when she's done eating. Since she tends to go to lunch a little earlier than me most days, this ends up happening while I'm still eating. It's gross.

But I can't decide if it's something I should say anything about, or just let it go. I admit I tend to be bothered by stuff like this (nose blowing, gum popping, open mouth chewing) more than most people. So I can't really tell if this is just my own neuroses getting in my way, or if it's something that would bother other people.

Would this bother you? Enough to say anything?

Re: Would you say anything? If so, what? (Coworker related)

  • I would say no, it may be gross or bothersome but it isn't really something somebody can control, I mean if you need to blow your nose, you need to blow it. She is doing it in the privacy of her own space.

If it was something like gum popping that she did all day long and was disruptive, then it would be different, you could probably get away with saying something but something necessary and personal will just probably cause office tension and do nothing to solve the problem.

It is actually good personal hygiene, I mean she could be snorting in her office all day long, so it could be worse.

  • No, I would not say anything.

What you could do is put on some headphones or something, since you know it is coming.

Also, please to be PIPing your cube with a door. This fascinates me.

  • That's why I asked. :) Thank you! I know I tend to be a bit crazy about that sort of thing, so I didn't want to say anything and risk putting my foot in my mouth. (Which I'm quite excellent at doing, sadly.)

  • nose blowing, no.

farting, burping, snorting/sniffling, or things of that sort would likely set me off, though.

This must be why they put me in an office - my excessive horrifying gas.  Wink

  • No, I would not say anything.   Ditto PP about headphones since you know it is coming.
  • Don't miss a golden opportunity here.  Get a ringtone or audio file of a very awesomely loud trumpet blast, and sound it off right as she starts to blow.

  • No, you definitely shouldn't ask someone to stop blowing their nose. Would you rather her not blow her nose and instead have snot run down her face? Is there an office rule against nose blowing? You can't go around asking people to stop blowing their noses.
