Grocery Store Vent

I am so tired of living in a small town where I can't get half the things I need at the grocery store.  We have 3 main grocery stores in town and I often have to visit all 3 to get what I need.

This week I was looking for broccoli rabe, poblano peppers, and ground lamb.   NONE of the markets carry broccoli rabe or poblano peppers.  Only one store sells ground lamb and they were out.  When I asked if this usually happens the guy at the meat department says that he's never seen so many people eat lamb before and that they sell out of ground lamb and lamb chops every week. So I say to him, do you ever think of ordering more so you don't run out?  He replies that no he never thought about that but that he might try that sometime.  Gee, great idea.

So, there are three dishes I either have to really adapt or not make this week.

End of vent.

Re: Grocery Store Vent

  • Your profile says you live in Frostburg, MD, but it sure sounds like you live in my tiny town in southeastern New Mexico!  We have three grocery stores too, and two have limited selections and the other is overpriced and always out of something.  I understand your frustration all too well.
  • Shaking my head at the fact that you suggested he order more and that was a novel idea.

I'm sorry. I know you've mentioned this before and it sucks that you can't find stuff you need. I don't know how small of a town you live in but I'm pretty surprised stuff is so hard to find these days. Bummer.

  • In their defense, with the economy not being great, all stores, especially small ones, are looking to cut inventory as much as possible in order to remain profitable.
  • I don't live in a small town and I still have to go to several stores to find products/brands of things I like. Its impossible to find one store that carries everything.
  • The city that I live in has a decent selection, thankfully, between the 5 different grocery store chains there plus a couple smaller ethnic markets (Hispanic, Indian, Asian, etc.), but BF lives out in the country, and it is IMPOSSIBLE to find anything that doesn't come in a box or a can.  The produce section is literally 1/3 the size of the one at the grocery store that I usually go to, and heaven help you if you're trying to find anything more "ethnic" than pre-made teryaki sauce.  It's really frustrating.

  • I think part of my issue is that I spent the first 22 years of my life in Pittsburgh where I could always find anything I needed either in the grocery store or by going down to the Strip District into the specialty markets.  No living in a small town, and one that is poverty stricken, it's so tough to find what I need.  I try buying things in bulk in Pittsburgh when I can, but you can't do that with produce.
