Ladies who exercise daily...

Now that I work at home I was hoping to find some time to exercise daily. The trouble is, my company works a full 8-hour day so there isn't much time. Normal hours are 8:30-5, with 30 minutes for lunch. I need to leave home at 4:30 to get K from daycare, so I'm working 8-4:30. I had hoped to exercise after my husband and K leave in the morning, but they're out the door at 7:15 and I need to exercise and shower then be at my desk at 8am. That's a lot to cram into 45 minutes.

Any tips/suggestions? I REALLY need to make this work and I can't feasible get up any earlier (I'm up at 6am as it is).

Do you think if I get myself dressed to exercise before my husband and K leave I can do the 30DS DVD and get a quick shower? I can't remember how long the 30DS workouts are but I can set everything up the night before so all I have to do is hit play.

Re: Ladies who exercise daily...

  • Do they let you have a scheduled lunch break? If so, what about doing the shred during that time?

  • Keep in mind that you don't need to, and in fact, shouldn't, work out every single day.  Working out for two weekdays and then both weekend days is sufficient (although I confess I prefer to get in 5 workouts per week).

So that means you only have to squeeze in a short workout and rush through a shower a couple times each week.  And 6am isn't that early; you might consider waking up a little earlier so you don't have to rush as much - again, you don't have to do it everyday.

30DS videos are about 27 minutes long.

Now, if it were me, I would just skip a shower until that night.  Isn't that the advantage of working at home?!  :)

  • I only get 30 minutes, which wouldn't be enough time to exercise and shower.
  • It it were me, I would workout at 7:15 for 45 mintues and then plan to shower over my lunch break and eat lunch at my desk. I just think that's what would work best for me, personally. I think you could very easily make a plate of leftovers or build a sandwich the night before for lunch and just grab and head back to work after your shower at noon.
  • Working out over the weekend is pretty much impossible given our schedule, so if I want to exercise 5 days a week it's going to have to be the 5 workdays. At this point I take an exercise class Tuesday evenings, so Tuesday is covered. If I can do Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday I think I'll be in good shape. I need to start small and work my way up. If I take on too much I'll get overwhelmed and not do anything. My goal is to exercise one additional day this week and build up.

I like the idea of exercising and then showering over lunch...that's probably the most feasible option for me since I know myself and I won't get up earlier than 6am (5am just seems ungodly to me from a pyschological standpoint).

    Thanks ladies.

5am is early but that's what time I have to get up to work-out. I have to be done working out, showered, dressed, have the dogs ready and out the door no later than 7am...but I usually leave closer to 6:40...

When DH is OOT I'll work out after work but if he's around, mornings it is.

  • I do majority of my running at 5am, which means I get up around 4:30am.  I go to the gym and run the treadmill or run with a couple friends I've made at the gym.  If I am there by 5am, I have 1 hour and 20 minutes to run.

I also get my weekend long run in early.  I do spend a good 2 hours on Sunday at the gym cross training and lifting.

I've run on my lunch hour at work.  I just bring clean undies, baby wipes, make up, deoderant, basically what I would need to freshen up without taking a full on shower.  My co-workers know I am a runner, so if they see my hair up in a ponytail after lunch, they know I went for a run.

  • I guess you could work out in the evenings after Katie goes to bed or after work/daycare before dinner.  Maybe you can figure out a family workout to do.

After Katie goes to bed is 10pm. :) By the time I get her home from daycare it's almost 6pm and it's a whirlwind of dinner, a little playtime, bath, and bed.

I think mornings are going to be it for me. I'd also rather get it out of the way early.

  • How about Body Rock TV (google them)? They are very fast work outs. I would be dressed in workout gear when they leave and do a thirty minute work out then shower and dress. I would set your clothes out the night before so you can make quick transitions.
  • I'm still trying to figure this out for myself too! But I do like the idea of showering at lunch-if I worked from home that's definitely what I would do!

Definitely possible.  I don't have your time crunch most days, but if I've scheduled a 10AM doctors appointment, or I'm meeting girlfriends for coffee, I can put my kids on the bus at 8:50, get home, do a 25-30 minute workout, shower, and leave my house by 9:40 to make it where I need to be.  Not ideal, but doable...I wear my workout clothes to the bus stop, and just drop my coat and keys when I get home as I head right for the DVD player.  I take quick showers and will just dry shampoo my hair if at all possible when I'm in a hurry (something you could definitely do if you were working from home, then just wash it at night or the next day).

  • I always thought morning workouts would be impossible for me. After a forceful week at the start of this school year, I love it! 4:30am is incredibly early, but taking time to make myself healthy is worth it. Plus, by the time I am fully awake my workout is almost over! At the end of work it's so nice to have it over with. I highly recommend mornings. Even if you do 7:15-8:00 to start. You may like it enough to increase it at some point.
  • What about splitting up your workout throughout the day? If you can't do a full 30DS workout in the morning, you could still do some sort of cardio (jumping jacks, jump rope, etc.) for 20 or 30 minutes and then do some weight training or abs or something over lunch with barbells or just body weight
  • yeah...this is exactly why I haven't worked out consistently in months (years?). :(  I'm just not into early morning workouts (meaning 5 am).  I prefer evening, but can't make it happen regularly. Work takes up too much time!
