New dog chasing movements on the wall

I brought Dixie home on Friday evening (she was a Labs4rescue dog from LA). She is settling in pretty nicely although I need to work on her jumping and loose leash walking (the harness is helping a bit). I will post pictures when I can remember how!

Here's my biggest complaint. I live on a fairly busy street and there is a lot of traffic. I also have a large bay window that lets a lot of light in. She has this obsession of running around the living room chasing the reflections of the cars driving by.  Yesterday she did it for over an hour and she started again a few minutes ago. I tried to close the blinds but that didn't help. I've tried to distract her with a bone to no avail.  I have hardwood floors so the noise gets annoying not to mention it appears to drive her crazy.  Any thing I can try to get her to sop or at least help her live peacefully with the bad lights that drive by?  I do have a clicker but she doesn't seem to like the noise.  Thanks!

Re: New dog chasing movements on the wall

  • Shadow/light chasing is a pretty common OCD behavior. For my border collie I just make a loud distracting noise and hustle out of the room, rewarding them when they follow me. Once they are reliability following me I add a work like ahah, enough, leave it when I make the noise and reward. Over time I just make the noise, say the word and reward for breaking away from the shadows and finally just give the word.
