Making food for a new mom and dad

I know this has been discussed on here before, but what kinds of things are the best to bring to a new mom and dad when they get home from the hospital? A good friend of mine is going to be induced tomorrow, so I'm expecting she'll be home from the hospital Thursday or Friday and I'd like to bring a meal to her and her husband that'll reheat well. What do you think? I thought of maybe sauce and meatballs and then a box of spaghetti, so they would just need to boil the pasta and heat up the rest. Thoughts?

Re: Making food for a new mom and dad

  • Anything quick will be appreciated.

Casseroles, I like your meatball/sauce noodle idea, chili, fresh fruit. My honest opinion is anything that can eat and grab (or eat right out of the pan) - less time for dishes. LOL!

  • My favorites were:

lasagna and garlic bread (with a bag of salad)

mac and cheese bake (with bag of salad)

    homemade chicken and noodles

    homemade chili mac and cornbread

  • After I ate hospital food for several days and DH lived on fast food, when a neighbor showed up with lasagna and salad, I was so happy. It was nice to have a fresh, green vegetable make an appearance.

  • I like the lasagna idea. That's always something that reheats really well. I make a decent lasanga, but it's not the best thing I make. haha Thanks for the veggie suggestions too. I wouldn't have thought of that, but they are big salad eaters, so I'll definitely bring them a nice salad with whatever else I bring.

  • I also agree with lasagna and anything that can be defrosted/ heated up quickly-- homemade soups are usually so easy to reheat and very appreciated.

We loved getting homemade chicken noodle to stash in the freezer and also my MIL's Italian sauce to defrost and pour over pasta.

  • I've been taking a big vegetable tray with homemade hummus to new mamas. They are lovin' it!

I would LOVE that...I eat hummus and veggies or pitas for lunch every day, but unfortunately, this new mama is really picky. Like, super picky, and she makes faces at my hummus all the time. haha

  • I usually make Fannie Farmer mac & cheese, but pour it into a foil pan without baking it.  I package the breadcrumbs separately and bring a salad with the ingredients into individual baggies so nothing gets soggy.  Sometimes I make a homemade dressing to go with it.

  • I made this lasagna a few weekends ago, and it was great. In fact, DH said "if you keep making lasagna like this we don't need to go out for Italian."

  • Pasta dishes are the best...  well just speaking from personal experience!  They are filling and homemade is just delicious.  We got a lasagna, baked ziti, mac n cheese.... it was all so good.  My fellow teachers got me gift certificates to local places with take out... that was fabulous too!
  • One of the food items I appreciated most was a breakfast basket.  We got a lot of dinner items (which were of course appreciated as well), but it was great to have stuff for the mornings, too, and I don't think a lot of people would ordinarily think of bringing something like that.  In the basket we received were citrus fruits, assorted bagels and muffins with a few kinds of cream cheeses (all from a local coffee shop), a bag of coffee from Dunkin Donuts, and some tea bags with honey sticks.  You could also make a baked french toast casserole to take along with some syrup.

  • DH's cousin just had a baby and I am going to make a brocolli cheese casserole and split it in two small foil pans. One for them to eat now and one to freeze for later. The whole one is huge and 2 people would have to eat it for days to finish it. I am also going to take a fruit salad because my dad got me an edible arrangement and I lived off that fruit for days. Now I am also considering some breakfast things. Smile

  • I'm a fan of ziti :) I usually make one big meal of it and portion it out into two aluminum pans. They don't have to worry about giving me my dish back and usually one pan leaves enough for leftovers so it really goes a long way. People seem to love it.
