Guilt over the Everlasting Treat Ball

I finally broke down and bought one to see if my dogs would like it--always looking to keep them busy, and I've read good things on this board about it.  However, I'm not loving the treats that go inside of it.  They're made in China and appear to be made of junk.  I feed TOTW, and this goes against everything I believe about feeding them.  I know that I can put other stuff inside of it, but then it's just like any other hide-a-treat kind of toy--I thought that the reason everyone loved this toy was because of the design of the specially designed treat that goes inside and it does take them a while to chew it down.  The 3 of them have been taking turns and after a day the treat is still hanging in there.  So, who's feeding high quality food and using this treat too...and why?  I'm torn.

Re: Guilt over the Everlasting Treat Ball

  • the treat itself is the only reason i don't have one of those.  i dislike treat balls that don't have flexibility with treats (read, i'm too cheap to keep purchasing their treats), and i especially dislike those with yuck ingredients.

having said that...giving a minimal amout of crappy treat won't kill my dogs either.

    Have you seen my monkey?
  • I used to give my girl one and at first she would just gnaw off the rounded top of the ball, and after a while she quit eating them altogether so I quit buying the treats.
  • We have the Everlasting Fun Ball instead of the Everlasting Treat ball so that we  can put all our own treats in it.

  • I tried it for Pel, but his stomach is so sensitive that we got woken up at 3 am every night for a week to the sound of him vomiting. Finally realized it was those treats causing it. He's a crazy chewer, so I wanted something that he'd have to work for. But he also started guarding it, so we stopped with edible chewing toys all together.

I have the big rubber treat ball and still use it by putting liver treats & biscuits in the middle for him to get out--he loves that just as much.

  • I already hold my dogs to a higher dietary standard than I hold myself so I don't worry too much about crappy treats. That said, those particular treats gave my dogs the worst gas ever!

  • My two only get that treat maybe once a month. I am not worried about that one treat when they are both being fed a very good diet.

And if you put that treat in upside down it will stay in and last twice as long.

  • We use the ball, but fill the ends with the kong mix that we use. We put freeze dried treats in the middle, fill one side with the kong mix, freeze it overnight, and then put kong mix on the other side and freeze that for another night.

We feed raw, and I don't like the ingredients in their premade treats, either.

  • I use this for my pups.  If you consider how often I buy the treats ( MAYBE once every two months)  I don't really think it is a big deal.  They are fed a great diet and I kind of justify it as their "cheat".  I have moved more to raw bones though... they last longer and are less expensive for three beasts.
