How do you take your baby's temperature?

I can't bring myself to stick a thermometer up her butt. LOL... The temporal thermometer says 99.9, so I just gave her some Tylenol and I'm not too concerned. Just wondering what you all do.

Re: How do you take your baby's temperature?

  • in the toosh! in the beginning we took his temp by holding the thermometer is his armpit and holding his arm closed (that's how the nicu nurses do it).  i never felt like it was right as he started getting bigger and squirming!

  • rectal always if we are really worried and want an accurate temp.  Nothing else is very accurate.

once Griffin was about 3.5 we started using an oral thermometer with him- he's good about keeping it under his tongue.  We have an ear and one of those forehead scanning ones- both are always a degree or more off compared to rectal.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • Enter in the rear!

The most accurate. I wouldn't trust the ear, forehead type things. We did it for Max until he was about 3. Weird I guess but it had to be done. Now he does it orally thank god.

Leo gets it the same way poor doll lol.

No thanks, I don't need child porn or Tweets from this site---thanks for the memories nesties---RIP, Franco---2004--2012.
  • Rectally. Still. I never found it difficult. He never cared and it's the most accurate. I never thought I'd be able to but you just do it.
  • OK, if she feels warm later I will just do it! lol

At what temperature are you calling the ped?

  • Liz you can do it! I did it up the rear for the first time this week and I was scared but he laughed the whole time, so either it didn't bother him or I have a strange kid ;)

I called the pedi when his was 99.4 bc he usually runs cool, like 98.3 BUT this was all paired with bloody stool, so it wasn't just a temp. She said to call for anything over 100.

LOL! That is cute that he laughed, maybe it tickles? ;)

    I hope he is OK!

THIS could be the best line I ever read on the Nest. Granted, I cut most of it but it is still awesome.

  • We use the temporal one first and if it indicates a fever we use the rectal. The temporal, ear (for my older one) and rectal all give very similar readings though. I've found them all to be accurate.
  • Always rectally, for both kids. It's the most accurate.
  • The first time I took her temp rectally I was scared, not gonna lie, but after that, it's been super easy.  I now say that that was the moment I finally felt like a mom.

  • Hiney until about 2 when he screamed, "please mom don't put that in my hiney!!!!"You've got to respect a kid with boundaries, lol. Now I have an ear one that's pretty on the mark...and I'm amazed that the mom gene kicked in and I know by feel that it might be high. Oh, and at her age anything over 102 that lasted more than a day I called the led. Now, its higher but she's still little.

Oh... my.... GOD LOL!!!!! I didn't realize I wrote that.... LOL!!!!!!

  • We were both scared of the rear.  Luckily Abby's had a fever like twice ever and I used the armpit.  I've never done the rear.

  • rectally. I was afraid at first, too, but my sister showed me how & then it was easy.

I put him on the changing table & put up his legs like I'm changing his diaper. Then hold his legs up & put the thermometer in gently with lots of Vaseline on the tip. If possible, I have MH distract him with a toy so he stays still.

I have that instant reading ear one & I don't trust it b/c I never know if I got it in his ear far enough.

  • Rectally. If it's over 102 I would definitely call. A fever is over 100.4. If it's over 100.4 for more than a day and she's having other symptoms I'd probably call.
  • In the butt for as long as they would let me. I wanted it to be accurate. It was the one thing I never ever did when I was a nanny and just couldnt bring myself to do. BUT one night, 3 am I was so nervous the other methods would be wrong and I was worried sick, I just sucked it up and did it. After that I didnt even bat an eye. Prepped me for all the other sick things I had to look forward too. Hope she feels better soon!
  • I always used the temporal too but they say rectal is the most accurate. I could never bring myself to do it.
  • Temporal thermometer....it's so quick and easy, accurate and what the hospitals use.

EDIT...I just want to add I never did a rectal temp with any of my three kids!

  • I always take it rectally.  When L turned 2 she refused to let me do it anymore so I got the Braun ear thermometer and it was really good.  I find that it is accurate for her and for myself (I've compared it with myself when I was sick to putting a thermometer in my mouth and it was the same readings).  However when they are babies I always do the rectal thermometer because it is the most accurate.  I tried the ear on A and it was not giving me the same reading and it was hard to get all the way into the ear.  Once you do it rectally once you will be fine.  I remember the first time we did it with L my dh and I got into a huge fight, we were both so nervous.
