Where did you stay in Costa Rica?

I'm looking for an all inclusive and want to be able to do some of the adventure tours. Thanks!

Re: Where did you stay in Costa Rica?

  • We stayed at the Westin Playa Conchal in Guanacaste outside Tamarindo. It was all inclusive. It was the first time I had ever been to an AI. It was still partially under construction but I think it has the potential to be amazing, this being Westin's first all inclusive I think they have some work to do in that area but the hotel itself was beautiful. Check it out on trip advisor. All in all I wasn't blown away by it, if I went back to CR I probably wouldn't do an AI.
  • We stayed at the Hilton in Papagayo, an AI.

The grounds are amazing! The food was mediocre, but so was most of the food I had throughout the country. Many of the big hotels are very secluded, so expect to rent a car, or pay for transportation, if you want to do anything off of the property.

If we were to go back, we would not do an AI. We would probably spend half of our time near the volcano, and the other half in a smaller hotel in Tamarindo.

If you're looking to spend most of your time at the hotel, I would recommend the Hilton. However, if you'd like to expore quite a bit (we did), I would not spend the money on an AI (this one, or any other).

  • Just a suggestion:  You may want to decide which area you're interested in first, then look for a resort.  There are so many different regions and climates in Costa Rica and each area offers something different (rain forest or drier area, etc.), and the beaches are very different also (white and brown sand, black volcanic, shells).

We stayed at Arenas del Mar in Manuel Antonio in the Central Pacific region.  We decided on MA because the rainforest meets the beach and there's wildlife everywhere.  We loved the resort and it has access to 2 beaches -- one public and one private.  The area is beautiful.  It's not an AI but there are lots of restaurants and tours/excursions in the area.  http://www.arenasdelmar.com/

  • We stayed at the Riu in Guanacaste, which is an AI. I'm pretty sure I lost weight during the vacation due to the resort's terrible food. That said, the grounds are stunning.

I agree with PP - you need to decide where in CR you want to go and then hunt for a hotel. If we were to go back to the Guanacaste region I'd stay at the Four Seasons. Not AI but it's supposed to be pretty awesome.

  • We went several years ago and stayed at Los Suenos in Herradura.  Loved the property.  It was perfectly located for day trips.  My husband chose it because of the golf course and we played 4/7 days.  The spa was also wonderful.  Highly recommend.  (You can read my full review on trip advisor.  Same screen name, posted 02/10/08).  Good luck!

Sorry to hijack this thread but I love your Frenchies, tucci!  AH!

Ok, back to the original question...

We stayed at four hotels/resorts on our CR trip.  El Silencio Lodge and Spa and Lapa Rios both included meals but not drinks.  Both were phenomenal and you could schedule outside excursions if you wanted them.  We were really content to stay on the property at both places because we did most of our excursions while visiting the Arenal area.

  • We stayed at Arenal Nayara in Arenal, then Los Altos de Eros near Tamarindo. Both are boutique hotels, with most meals and drinks included. High recommended.
