If so - how do you feed it?
Jasper had diarrhea last night. (even had a little accident in the house - which is hasn't done since Turkey Day, poor guy). We decided to try the "pumpkin cure" as I call it, since his tummy is still a little upset today and he's had some extra stinky parts (meaning, H and I left today so we didn't smell them )
Anyway - we can't get him to eat it. It's the 100% pumpkin puree (not the pie stuff, no worries!) We tried on a treat and probably with his food tonight. He has no interest in it, he honestly looked at me with the "WTF are you trying to give me?" face. We don't feed wet, so I can't mix it in with that.
TIA
Re: Do You Give Your Dog Pumpkin?
Abso-frickin-loutely!! We have a bag of pumpkin-cubes in the freezer readily available at all times, & at least 1, if not 2, cans of pumpkin on hand in the cupboard.
Cooper loves the stuff, so we don't have to alter it in any way. He'll eat it by the spoonful.
I fill ice cube trays w/the pumpkin & then freeze them. Once they're frozen I dump them into a ziploc bag that I keep in the freezer all the time, so whenever I/he needs some, I can just grab it. He'll even eat them completely frozen. When I 1st started doing this, I kept warming it up for him.
Sorry Im not much help in giving you ideas on how to trick your dog! GL though!
I'm going to try freezing them - maybe it will just have a better appeal? I think the pumpkin smell with decrease if it's frozen - he has quite the sniffer on him!
I'm planning on trying mixing it with his evening meal (well, H - he gets meal duties tonight). My only concern with that is he and Dakota share a bowl (we've tried 2 separate bowls, doesn't work) they take turns eating. Will the pumpkin make her constipated if she eats it? She doesn't have tummy issues at all, tummy of steal. We could feed her rocks and chocolate all day and she'd be fine...
I also always have a can on hand since Collins has a sensitive tummy. Its been an awesome thing!!
I mix it in with their food and have never had any problems. Granted my dogs beg for everything from onions to celery, bananas to oranges. They're weird. They would eat it all to.... (obvs don't give them puppy unsafe stuff)
When I give it to Collins I give it to Ziva, who also has a tummy of steal, and she's never had a problem.
I just mix it into Jerrick's dry kibble... He thought it was wierd at first too, but now its just the norm. He gets it regularly because of digestive issue and soft poo from his grain free diet.
I mix a couple teaspoons into the first helping of kibble he gets each day. The only time I have problems with him eating it is if it is too cold (like, straight out of the fridge). In an hour or so it is eaten though.
dawg will not WILL NOT eat it.
Ever.
Unless the kittehs try to eat it. Then, in a bout of peevish foodbowl agression, she'll eat a bit or 2.
So, uh, I use the kittes to bait her into it.
She would eat it straight out of the can if I let her!
Try a frozen kong of it?
Sweet potatoes work well too. Probably a little better for my dog than the pumpkin does, but between her and DS, I keep a good stock of pumpkin!
Yep! Always have it on hand! I also make his dog treats using pumpkin. Tyson LOVES it!
i actually prefer giving rice to help with diarrhea.
Have you seen my monkey?
My dog likes pumpkin but even a little bit does bad things for his digestive system, so I prefer to just give psyllium fiber instead of pumpkin. I also have found that for diarrhea, slippery elm is really helpful. I regularly give probiotics, digestive enzymes, prebiotics, and psyllium fiber for a healthy digestive system but when there are issues I use slippery elm.
If you can't give him the pumpkin, I would just try to give fiber directly or slippery elm.
my guy only likes it fresh - so maybe the scent does have something to do with it. He likes it right off the spoon, or I'll put it in with his food.
Pumpkin is "magical" in that it won't hurt your other dog at all. Given for diarrhea it firms up stool. Given for constipation it softens stool.
Thanks guys!
The frozen cubes didn't work for Jasper (Dakota Loved them!)
I was able to mix it in his dry food - he obviously didn't enjoy it, and kept giving me dirty looks, but he ate it!
