Downton! (spoilers inside)
I don't know whether I'm SO VERY HAPPY that mary & matthew are getting married or annoyed that the story line is over. Although, if something happens where they don't get married now, I'll be even MORE annoyed.
I wonder if she's still going to NY....I know Shirley McLane (sp?) is going to be the grandma.
I can't believe we have to wait another year for this...
Re: Downton! (spoilers inside)
is it really a whole 'nother year?!?!?! I can't take it!
I got completely sucked into this over the past month (way late to the party) and I'm so sad that this season is over already :-(
I am happy that Mary and Matthew are together (at laaaaaast...), but there's no way that they are just going to let those two be happy at this point. And I agree, whatever they throw at them will be really annoying.
I was sad because I was kind of spoiled about the proposal, but it was still sweet and awesome. I also thought Isobel gave him such great advice (after being made to be kind of a doofus the last few episodes). And Violet totally killed it--I teared up a little when she told Daisy that we she did for William was "the opposite of unloving." Awww.
Yeah I'm curious how the whole New York/Shirley MacLaine angle comes in. I thought it might have been interesting to take the show to NY for a bit, although probably not all that practical.
My friend said it starts in the UK in September . . . I might have to watch a bootlegged version.

From what I hear, the British version is very different - much less edited - than ours. I plan on occupying myself for the next year by tracking down and watching all of the originals!
what?? there is a whole different British version? and with less editing? they can't do that to us!
You can get the unedited DA DVDs on Amazon, fwiw.
I do hope the Daisy-feeling-guilty storyline is OVER. It's just kind of annoying.
Next season I hope:
-To learn more about Sybil's life in Ireland
-See a Mary/Matthew wedding
-See Bates be set free
I'm happy about the proposal. There were only so many ways you can keep them apart and it was getting old. I'm sure there are lots of fun story lines coming down the pike.
Sybil should be coming back next season.
They'll probably introduce a new character or two. I think Mary will come back with her grandmother from NYC.
DH and I are really sad it will be a whole year until new episodes!

Like BH, I just started this -- yesterday! watched the first 6 episodes in one sitting! Will finish up epi 7 tonight, then scrounge to find Season Two. So good.... and I don't even care about spoilers!
"What is a week-end?"
I really encourage anyone who doesn't usually watch or DVR Masterpiece to keep your eyes peeled to their programming. They do some really great stuff! We should get new seasons of Sherlock (modern Sherlock Holmes...completely brilliant), Inspector Lewis (such good characters), and a Dickens adaptation this year.
Last year there was some talk of cutting funding for Masterpiece. More viewers can only be a good thing!
I know I'm in the minority but I dislike Mary. And the Matthew/Mary story line was just so filled with entirely too much angst and melodrama when it was obvious they would end up together. I was like "Why didn't you just friggin' tell him that last season???". I mean, I still love it, obviously, but found it kind of annoying and woeful this season.
I'm glad she finally stuck it to Carlisle, though. And the grandmother's comment about "Is that a promise?" was awesome.
DH and I had a theory that Anna was somehow involved with the murder of the former Mrs. Bates, especially when she made that outburst when he was found guilty. But I can't imagine she would have let him go all the way to death row, so probably not.
Mary has grown on me. At first, I hated her. She was elitist & self-absorbed & too proud. However, over this season I've grown to like her more. It's as if she's grown a real, feeling heart.
She's done lots of genuinely nice things for Anna & did not try to stop Matthew from marrying Lavinia or expose Lavinia's secret (which is something the old Mary would have done).
They have all the episodes for Season 2 on the pbs website.
I only watched the 2nd half of the finale. According to my mom, she said it was very anti-climatic and she was sort of disappointed how they kind of just wrapped everything up and didn't really leave anything hanging.
We make the rockin' world go 'round.
I can't believe the British version is different! I might have to ask for the unedited DVDs for my birthday.
I loved the final episode! I don't think everything was wrapped up neatly - really just the Mary/Matthew storyline. We still don't know what will happen to Bates, or with Sibyl and her new family or what Sir Richard will say/do about Mary & Mr. Pamouk (sp?) now that Mary has left him. Not to mention that I'm sure they have lots of new stuff thought up. I hope Edith gets a good plotline. I have faith in Julian Fellowes!
I hated Sir Richard and I was so happy when Matthew punched him in the face. He was so annoying with all that "why are we serving ourselves?" stuff. I am disappointed that Thomas got rewarded for his bad behavior. I can't decide if he is going to turn over a new leaf or be up to his old tricks.
Oh, yeah, Edith. What happened to that storyline? She was all "I'm not giving up on you" to the old guy with the bad arm (can't remember his name) and then . . . nothing. It's like they forgot about her for the rest of the episode.
I liked the new Daisy/William's dad dynamic.
And did anyone else get the feeling that when Rosamund found her BFand the maid together, she was definitely sad about it, but also kind of sad that she found out? Like this was her last chance to get married (or re-married, I never could tell if she had been married before), and she wished she didn't know so they could go on dating and be companions? Or maybe I'm reading way too much into her "d@mn" comment.

YES. I think she liked him. A lot. I think she was married before b/c that's how she had buckets of money (there has been references in the past that her husband was rich but maybe new-money or something)
Also, the final episode wasn't the "finale", that was our second-to-last episode. Our final episode was the "xmas special" that the brits had to wait months for. In several of the UK shows I watch, it seems like the Xmas Specials are really stand-alone (like a little movie) that wraps up neatly at the end & doesn't have cliff hangers. It's just too bad for us that it was at the end of our viewing which sets us up for expecting a cliff hanger.
Edith sucks, I can't stand her...or her weird old man crush. She was dead to me when she tattled on Mary about the Turkish guy.
But speaking of Edith...when she kissed that farmer guy, was he married? I wasn't clear on whether or not that other lady was his wife or just his sister.
I'm pretty sure it was his wife. I feel like Edith, when she was first talking about driving, told her father that she heard Mrs. ____ was talking about how their tractor driver got called to the front & now they needed someone & she thought she could do it.
that's what I thought...whattawhore!
LOL.
Have y'all seen the DA stars on screen vs. off screen comparison? Ethel, O'Brien & mrs. Hughes are crazy:

Hee! I love these. Especially Bates with the baby (love), and that they included the dog. It's amazing what a little makeup does for some of those actresses, eh? Miss O'Brien is attractive! Who knew?

Hands down my favorite part of the behind the scenes on Sunday was seeing everyone in "real life". Lavinia actually looked waaaay worse. She looked like a street character out of Dickens.
OK, I'm way late to this party but I just finished watching the finale. Loved it. Tears at the end when Matthew proposed... I love them together. Although, I have to say, they made Carlisle kind of randomly evil at the end. I thought earlier on in the season he wasn't necessarily a bad match for Mary. He was tough, witty and shrewd. But then they sort of turned him into a monster so Matthew could swoop in and rescue her. Let her fend for herself! Although, that scene with Mary and Lord Grantham was unbelievably sweet when he forgave her for the Mr. Pamuk business. Awww.
Tired of Bates and Anna, to be frank. Why is he such a martyr?? Anna needs less drama in her life. She's too sweet.
I missed Sybill in this episode. I thought there was a lot left hanging, including the baby, whether or not Carlisle will spill Mary's secret, what will happen with Lady Edith? I'm thinking Shirley Mclaine will be in England for the wedding??
Credit for this goes to my DH - apparently the farmer/wife were the ones who were in the hospital. Remember, when the farmer almost died and Isobel fought for them to use the adrenaline on his heart? I totally didn't recognize him, but my DH did.
whoa! mad props to your dh! that's totally right!
wow! go, Mr.Litasail! I would have never remembered that.
Finally watched it. Like the pp, my favorite part was the Dowager Countess's "do you promise?" LOL.
Does anyone else talk in a British accent for the rest of the evening after watching DA? Or is it just H and me...

Ha! No, but we switched it to something else and I was like "Why do they sound so stupid and American?" I kept expecting everyone to be speaking with British accents.
