composting question

Can I put whole fruit in compost or just peels? Specifically asking about watermelon, bananas and oranges.

Re: composting question

  • We have a worm bin and were told that they don't like citrus, so I don't put any citrus fruit peels in.  Watermelon and banana (fruit, not just peel/rind) can go in, we just cut it into one inch (ish) sized pieces first, so that it doesn't have to break down completely.

  • We put whole fruit in our compost bin on occasion, generally apples, oranges and pumpkins are what end up in there whole.  They always decompose just fine.

  • I find orange peels do not compost well.  Whole fruit isn't a problem but smaller pieces break down quicker.
