Clinics who do VBACs

The hospital I had my daughter at doesn't do VBACs.  I'm due for my yearly exam, and wanted to go a clinic where I could talk with them about it.  Where other than Iowa Clinic will do VBACs?  I was hoping to deliver at Methodist.

I'm not pregnant now, but planning to start TTC in 6-12 months and want to be prepared.  TIA

Re: Clinics who do VBACs

  • it really depends on your provider and your ability to self-advocate. many women find the most supportive providers are the Iowa City midwives.

DEFINITELY check out the local ICAN website and attend some meetings, even before you are pregnant. they are an awesome bunch of women. www.icaniowa.com

  • I know Dr Mintzer with Lakeview OB/GYN is very open to discussing VBAC options. I wasn't necessarily a good VBAC candidate, but he told me if I wanted to attempt it he would stand behind me.  I agree with MrsTice, though, that you must be willing to be your own advocate.  I think in any type of labor and delivery women need to stand up and make their opinions and needs heard!  Or you could hire a fabulous doula.  :-)

  • Dr. Lehman at Lakeview OB was also supportive of VBAC for my next baby. That said, it is a large group of providers that could potentially be at Methodist when you deliver so you would want to make sure you are knowledgeable about what you want to happen in case it isn't your primary doctor at the hospital during your delivery!

    yes, definitely hire a doula!  : )

  • The entire hospital where you delivered the first time doesn't allow VBACs?

I have no experience outside of Dr. Mintzer, but agree w/ Lucylea that he is very pro-patient choice. According to the L&D nurses at Methodist, he is one of the very strongest patients advocates.

  • Yep, the whole hospital.  It's a smaller one-Skiff in Newton.  They don't have a OB-only doctor either.  They have 4 or 5 doctors who do OB, but no practice dedicated to it.
