Dog's left eye looks dark red

I don't normally post here, but I thought someone might have a suggestion on what to do in this situation.  Here goes:

Saturday my husband asked me to look at our dog, Dobby's, left eye because it was red on the outer edge (Dobby had been playing with a bigger dog in our house Friday night and they did run into our coffee table at one point).  I looked at Dobby's eye and it was indeed red, but I decided it was no different than what happens with our eyes when a blood vessel bursts.  In the last few days his eye starts out, again on the outer/upper edge, as bright/dark red but as the day goes on it gets very pale/lightish pink.  He doesn't scratch at his eye and there isn't any unusual discharge nor does he act like he's in any pain.  So my question to you is: will this be something that goes away over time, much like what happens whenever I have a blood vessel issue in my eye, or is this something that we should get little Dobby to the vet and have checked out?

I don't post during the day although I will be reading your responses.  Thanks in advance for your help with this.  I just want to make sure I don't need to be worried about Dobby.

Thanks!

  • I would go to the vet, but I'm a little trigger happy with the vet.

My thoughts are:  it's been a couple of days, it's not healed, and you suspect it's a tramatic injury.  While it's likely nothing serious, I think that eye injuries are some of the harder ones to self-evaluate to determine whether or not it's serious.

Your vet can provide you peace of mind by evaluating it.  Additionally, if it is just a scratch (which is what it sounds like), your vet can likely provide some sort of ointment to help with the healing process.

  • Red on the eye or the skin around it?

We(including two vets!) thought Dexter had an allergy and it ended up being demodex mange.  Yak!  His started off being a little red and then started with hair loss.

His looked like this lol. (Sorry so big, just want you to be able to see it better)

  • It is the white part of his eye that is red.  This afternoon when I got home from work I looked at his eye and it's now a dull pinkish/brown in the white of his eye.  He is still running and jumping like normal, no funky smell or discharge to his eye, and he isn't treating it like he's in any kind of pain.

I'm thinking we're on the mend.
