Which would you do?

DH wants to have a "we'll be here, come if you want" type bday party at a bar.  He suggested Bethesda, but where we would go (Union Jack's) is a bit of a hike from the metro, so I suggested we have it at our local place, where we go every weekend (Limerick) in Wheaton, which is 1 block from the metro.

DH is worried no one will come because it's so far (most people will be coming from work in DC, and some coming from VA), but I think it's more convenient because it's so close to a metro station, plus, if people drive, there's plenty of parking, and it's free.

I should note - the party won't even start until after 10pm when DH gets out of work, so it's not like anyone will be battling rush hour traffic.

ETA:  Pretty much everyone invited works until 10 or 11, so it's not like they'd me making a special trip out so late.  The joys of shift work :)

Re: Which would you do?

  • I'd go closer in to the city. I'd be tempted to not come to a party that didn't start until 10p, but that's just cause I hate staying up late. Is it a weeknight? Closer in to the city, more people will be able to drop by rather than traveling an hour.  Just my 2 cents.

I'll add it to my OP, but everyone who is invited also works until 10, with the exception of about 3 people.

  • I would have it at your local metro-accessible place. I would definitely rather take the metro than drive.

  • I vote for the Limerick, since it is really convenient to Metro.
  • Coming from VA, either place is a haul, so I'd probably be just as likely (or unlikely) to go to one or the other.  Metro access AND parking would seal the Wheaton location for me.

  • I don't think free parking in Wheaton is enough of a lure to offset the longer hike (compared to Bethesda) for the VA and DC crew.  I don't even think the actual drive time is necsesarily that much longer - it just seems longer and something I might bail on.

Is there someplace in DC that you can do it that is closer to DH's work?  If I lived in Virginia and metro'ed in, I wouldn't go all the way out to Wheaton that late to turn around and have to go back into DC to switch lines to go home.... (though I don't metro often, so maybe there is an easier way to do it?)

On the flip side, Wheaton is close enough for me to take a quick and cheap cab ride home, so I'll be there!  Beer  Then again, since you quit drinking for Lent, I guess that you could just drive me home.  Yes

  • I'd do it closer in to the city, as well. More convenient, and since it's already starting late I'm guessing people will want to be closer to home at the end of the night.

This is exactly why I suggested Wheaton to him.  When he wants me to meet him out after work, I evaluate how accessible it is.  If there's no parking or metro - I usually don't go because it's too big of a hassle.

  • Hmmm, given that you won't be getting started until 10 or 11, maybe it is too far (I'd also check to see if there's weekend track work scheduled....)

Is there a place that's right by work?  Maybe I'd schedule somewhere that's deep into downtown - near chinatown or metro center...

  • I vote for the more metro-accessible place, especially since people will be drinking.
  • I have been to the UJ's in Bethesda and I don't think it is that bad of a walk from the Metro. It's only like 10 minutes.

That's what I was going to say. I don't know about the others but if Bethesda is closer to the rest of your friends, or a shorter metro ride, if you tell them to just walk straight to Old Georgetown (and make sure they don't go all the way up to 355) it's really only a 7 minute walk to Union Jack's.

  • I'd stick to Bethesda since it's a bit closer to DC.  It's been warm out and I dont think the walk is far.  Is the trolly still in serve that late?
  • i agree with the PPs that union jacks is not that far from the metro at all. i would not put it in the "too far to walk" category.
