talk to me about brushing his teeth please

santino only has 3 teeth actually out right now. we introduced him to the nuk little nuby toothbrush a few weeks ago, but he just chews on it. not sure if he should be getting more done with it lol

i noticed this morning that his two bottom teeth have a little bit of a yellow film. so now of course i feel awful, like i should be more on top of cleaning those little chiclet teeth. but he wont have it. he wont let me in his mouth with the rag, and if i do get close enough, its not long enough to rub that spot.

should i be doing more to clean his teeth or should i just let it be and not sweat it?

Re: talk to me about brushing his teeth please

  • I'm curious to see the responses as well...Olivia has her front 8 teeth and I've been using the brush that you put on your fingertip. Just like Santino she just wants to bite it but I'm able to kind of clean them. I've thought about moving her brushing to bath time since she's so busy splashing that she would probably let me...but I give her dinner after her bath so that would kind of defeat the purpose.

  • the boys like to bite our fingers when we use the fingertip brush.  you just have to keep doing it over and over until you get the teeth clean.  i brush their tounges, their lips, their gums.. whatever they let me do.  sometimes it takes a while but it happens.

there's a lot of "ben, no" and "jack, no" involved ;)

proof that i make babies. jack, grace, and ben, in no particular order

so do you just suck it up and continue using the fingertip brush or is there something else you're using?

  • DS only has 3.5 teeth, but he's pretty good at letting me brush. I use a toddler bristle brush & toddler toothpaste. He knows "open" & "say aah", so I just keep repeating the commands along with "good boy", "good job", etc. until I've gotten most of the teeth & gums.

I kinda do a sneak attack on the teeth by putting the brush in toward the back of his mouth first & then bring it toward the front to get the teeth. If I just go straight to the teeth with the brush, then he gets his suction hold on the brush & sucks all the paste off before it even comes in contact with the teeth, lol.

  • We used the fingertip rubber thing for a while... but one trick that made it easier to brush my sons teeth (I think maybe by the time he was one?)  is that we would sit him on top of the tank of the toilet and straddle the toilet.  We would give him our toothbrush so he can "brush" our teeth, while we brush his teeth, simultaneously... MH came up with this, after watching me struggle with, lol....  He would let us do whatever we needed to do to him because he has brushing one of us at the same time. Its a lot easier now and he actually asks to brush his teeth now in the morning and at night, but when he starts acting, this trick still works.
  • also wanted to mention, I brush his teeth during his nightly bath. After I brush his teeth, I let him do it himself, too, which usually consists of him dunking the brush in the water & then him chewing on it, lol. If I think I didn't do a good enough job, then I just follow up with the washcloth on my finger.

    this is brilliant!

ok, im going to give this a go. thank you everyone!

mom of the year here. my kid hasnt even had teeth for two months and they are already dirty =(

  • Julia likes to brush her teeth when she sees Adam & I doing it.  So I just put a little bit of the toothpaste I use for Adam on her toothbrush & brush em.  She loves to walk around with it though, so I buy some kid's brushes at the dollar store, so it's ok that they are disposable LOL.

  • K loves having her teeth brushed. From an early age we involved her in the process and I think that helped. She also watches us brush. I think some kids are just not going to like it, but if you try to make it fun and let him help then you might have a better shot.

We never used the finger brush, just a regular toddler brush with training toothpaste. In the beginning she chewed on it to the point where I had to replace the brush every month or so, but now she's pretty good. Our rule is that mommy/daddy brushes her teeth first and then it's her turn. That way I get to do a good, thorough job, and then she can play around and get used to doing it herself.

  • My husband brushes my daughter's (1 year old- 6 teeth) at the same time that he is brushing his and in front of the mirror. This way she is distracted by looking at herself getting her teeth brushed and watching her daddy brush his teeth.
