just had Billy's OT evaluation

He needs help with his core strength, fine motor (which I knew) and maybe seeking pressure.   She is recommending twice a week.  My heart breaks for my little guy that things are so much harder for him.  Not fair!

Re: just had Billy's OT evaluation

  • at least you are being proactive and getting him the help he needs! <hugs>!!
  • What kind of things does he have trouble with? My son's motor skills are not good, bouncing a ball, riding a bike, he has a very hard time doing.

Those skills may be more gross motor rather than fine motor which is usually a physical therapist, rather than occupational therapist. At least in the schools that is what I have seen.

  • I'm sorry :(  But you're being the best mommy you can by noticing and reacting...

  • At least you are aware and getting him intervention. Plus Im sure they will teach you some techniques to use at home.

The OT i work with always encourages a white dry erase board to help them with writing letters and have them learn top to bottom. There are different scissors for different stages if he has trouble cutting. You can also do practice with hiding things in playdoh, and only taking out with one hand. You can make a piggy bank out of a coffee can top making it more challenging to put the money in. Give him the money to hold, different sizes, and have him use only 1 hand and his fingers to bring money from palm to fingers and put in bank. Its challenging! You can do one coin then two or three to put in at once.

Anyway my point is, I know you work with him at home so Im sure he will do great once you get therapy suggestions!

  • it's hard when they need extra help- but he's getting and he'll do great... a few years from now you won't remember it all :)

I have gray's first child study team meeting tomorrow... so i feel your pain!

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • It's definitely not fair, but you're doing a great job getting him the help he needs!  I bet he'll be caught up in no time!

  • Thanks.  It is so hard hearing it even if you know.  i will feel sorry for the both of us today and then get to fixing it.  It isn't gross so much.  a littlle weakness in his torso but he can jump,  pedal, catch, etc.  It is more fine motor and core strength building  and some sensory issues.

  • Rutherford is doing a complete work up.  They already provide speech and I asked for the OT evaluation.  I can not say enough about the  district!

  • No, not fair and you are allowed to be sad about it but know that you are doing a great job by advocating for him and getting him the help he needs so that he will be able to reach his full potential and more!  Hugs

  • Hugs! Just know you are an awesome mom because you are getting him help. Bella had issues with her hands, holding a pencil, crayon, drawing, coloring....all "normal" stuff she couldn't do. I got her OT and she is thriving now. I actually get teary each time she draws me a pic. It sucks for a bit but in the long run he wi be better for it. Sounds like the district is really working with you, that is wonderful.
