Since starting the steroids again yesterday morning, he's starting to perk up again! I just talked to the vet, and he said that M is sitting up on his chest in his kennel again, and was very thirsty this morning. They gave him food & water through a syringe, but he took them both. Next they're going to see if they can get him to eat on his own.
His white blood cell is still really high at 35,000, but his liver counts are back to normal. Yay! So the plan is to continue with the steroids. The biggest hurdle today will be getting him to eat on his own (which I'm sure he will), and getting his strength back up. They tried to take him outside this morning, but he couldn't really get his back legs under him, so it didn't work. But considering he hasn't had any of his normal meds (arthritis & thyroid) since Friday, that doesn't surprise me at all. Plus, he's been laying in a kennel sick since Saturday.
So I've got to call back this afternoon to check on him, but if he's getting some strength back by then, we'll talk about him coming home tonight! If not, they'll keep him 1 more night to work on that.
The vet also said M snapped at him when he went to give him the steroid tablets, which is a great sign to me - means he's feeling more like himself! I know my dog, and I know he doesn't care for spending more time than necessary in a kennel. (We don't crate him at home.)
I can't even begin to describe the relief I'm feeling right now! Even though he's not home yet, and still may not come home today, knowing that he's showing progress today is wonderful. I think once we get him home and back on his normal meds, with the addition of the prednisone as a maintenance drug, he'll be back to normal in no time.
Re: A positive update on Miller!
It's all about the little victories.
I hope you get to bring him home soon- you know all animals would probably get better faster outside of that stressful environment... if only we had live-in around the clock vets. hehe.
