For the first time in a quite a while, I was really pleased with this episode.
I got a few laughs (Marshall's sex noises and O-face; "Ted, it's a VCR!"), I feel like Ted's finally gotten closure on Robin or he's nearly there, and it feels like things are finally progressing forward toward meeting the mother (nice to see a little flash-forward to her at the beginning).
I would've missed the Conan O'Brien cameo if MH hadn't pointed it out.
Re: HIMYM 2/20
I was satisfied with this episode, but I did miss the Conan cameo.
I felt like it filled in some of the gaps for me, and I was glad that Robin and Ted have finally closed that chapter (even though I thought that was over). I am very curious who Robin moves in with now...
Yeah, what was this about? H pointed it out and I didn't believe him, I had to rewind it.
ETA I just googled, looks like Conan won a charity auction for a cameo on HIMYM
It was ok but I was dissapointed when Marshall wasn't paying up on the bet at the end. They're beating a dead horse with the robin and ted thing. let it go already!!!!
when was the conan cameo? i totally missed it.
I really enjoyed this episode too. I'm glad that Ted finally realized that he won't be with Robin and asked her how she really feels and decided he can't have her as a fallback.
Some of the bets between Lily and Marshal had me cracking up, especially the one about Ted pulling off being bald. I was also disappointed that Marshall didn't pay up and agree that Ted and Robin wasn't going to happen.
I missed the Conan cameo. What part did he come out in?
When Barney jumps over a table and runs out of the bar in search of the sex tape, he runs right by Conan O'Brien.
Neil Patrick Harris was on Conan several months ago and they talked about some celebrity auction they both attended. Conan bid on, and won, a walk-on spot on a future episode of HIMYM. Apparently the HIMYM writers were coming up with a speaking cameo role for him, but Conan said he thought it'd be funnier if he was just a guy hanging out at the bar with no lines and no mention of him being a celebrity. MH had to rewind the DVR because I missed it the first time.
I didn't really like how Marshall said "We'll see" at the end ... but I think Ted's closed the door on a relationship with Robin, whereas I think she'll give it one last shot in the future. I think that Ted calling off their deal to get married when they're 40, plus all of the girls with yellow umbrellas at the end, signifies that Robin is no longer standing in the way of him finding the right girl.
I would've walked away very pleased with this episode had it not been for the last part with Marshall saying "Not yet.." They showed the Stella thing and he kept saying "Not yet..." and ended up being right. They didn't close the door. This is the same episode we've seen over and over and over again. Ted thinks he loves Robin. Robin says No. Ted meets someone else. They break up. Ted confesses his love for Robin again. Robin says No. etc..etc.. etc...
If they would've left it without Marshall saying anything, it would have been so muc better. Don't "pretend" to close the door. I can see the writers easily copping out and saying Ted was an unreliable narrator because these are the things they LOVE to do to us. I think they are honestly testing the patience of their viewers right now.
Sure this episode was funny and had some of the old "laughs" in it but we beat a dead horse, again. There was no real progress because of those last couple minutes.
Sorry for the rant. I just feel like I've been with this show for so long and am constantly dissatisfied this season...
I was also really ticked at Marshall's last "Not yet," too, but actually I think it makes sense.
After Robin flat-out told Ted she didn't love him, it was easy enough for him to say that he was over her and moving on with his life ... because what choice did he have? But if some time passes and they're both still single, and Robin comes to him and suddenly announces that she's still in love with him and maybe they can find a way to have kids if it'll make him happy, then what's he going to do?
If he's REALLY over her then he'll say no thanks, because he'll know that she will just never love him the way he wants a wife to love him. Even if it means that he'll be alone for the rest of his life. If he's not really over her then he'll get back with her in a heartbeat, because he'll think Robin's the best he's going to do. I think that was what Marshall may have been suggesting with "Not yet." Not really that they're going to get together, but that the door isn't fully closed yet.
I'm wondering if he's going to meet The Mother and then realize that that's a better love than he had with Robin (and not just because The Mother wants kids and Robin doesn't), or if he'll realize on his own that he and Robin wouldn't have worked and THEN he'll meet The Mother. I think the latter would be better for the show because then it'll play into all that "I needed to grow as a person before I met Mom" dribble that he's been telling the kids for seven years.
RE: bolded comment, I can totally see them doing this if the show fizzles out near the end. Since the creators have had an End Game in mind since before the series even started, I'm hoping they can wrap it up nice instead of floundering around trying to think up an ending that makes sense.
I actually liked the "not yet" at the end.
Now afterTed meets the mom, Lilly's going to ask Marshall randomly to "pay up" and he will.
I think it will be adorable and only noticeable to what it means to fans who watch every week.
I was thinking something like that might happen but I wonder if the writers are that creative anymore. I'd like to think so, but I'm not sure.
This is what I was thinking... something like when Marshall sees Ted and the mother together then he will pay up to lily.
