Anyone have experience with sinus surgery/nose job

So I have been sick with a sinus infection since Dec. 19th. My Dr is cutting me off from meds and I have to see the ENT. I know what they will say, you need to get your nose fixed due to pollyps and deviated septum.

I know the horrible things that come after, the packing of the nose, the breathing through mouth for days.....but realistically how many days are we talking about?

I have 2 kids to take care of, my husband doesnt have a lot of vacation time and I prefer to use it on actual vacations. I do have other people who can help care for me and my kids but I am only willing to go so far with putting them out. So what's the deal (and be gentle the idea of it makes me want to vomit)

Re: Anyone have experience with sinus surgery/nose job

  • I don't have first hand experience, but our niece had this surgery twice- I would say she was really bad for about 4-5 days, but her nose was broken and needed a lot of work. The second time was maybe 2 days, 3 tops of really being out- and this surgery was a lot less this time- It take a lot longer to fully heal, but that you will need help- think about a week-, so ask 3-4 people for a day or so each-

you need to be healthy for your kids, so asking for help for a week is not the end of the world and I am sure they won't mind it when it is a day or so each-

I dont but I'm in the exact same boat, almost to the date. Caleb whacked me in the nose when we were laying on the floor looking at the Christmas tree. I've had a sinus infection since then. My dr just told me the same thing. Gave me a stronger dose of antibiotics and said (in so many words) "if this doesnt work, dont come back. You need to see an ENT."

I feel your pain, literally! Good luck!

  • I had it done.  I've broken my nose twice and had it rebroken and reset once.   When I had it rebroken and reset I had them do sinus surgery as well to straighten my deviated septum and cut out turbinates and clear out my sinuses.

Morgan broke my nose last year and the doctor said that I've had so much damage from the previous breaks that he's afraid that he can't fix it anymore this time.  He said that he can knock me out and go in and shrink the turbinates.  That would be same day surgery, no packing, and up and about without any problems by the second day.

When I had the original sinus surgery / rebreak / reset / done it was horrible.  Not going to sugar coat it.  It's just a very uncomfortable recovery for the first 2-3 days.  Once the packing is out, then you feel better but your nose is sensitive for at least a two months.

I went to Dr. Prabhat at Central Jersey Otolaryngology in Shrewsbury on Route 35 North.  They are quick to get appointments with too. No long wait.

Good luck and hope you're feeling better soon.

Yeah I have known for 7 years of sinus infections that I need the surgery but for some reason I cant seem to shake this one this year, since my lovely kids keep coming home with colds which they get better and I get a sinus infection from.....good times

I just wish I wasnt so stupid in 2005 and had just sucked it up, gotten it done, enjoyed the drugs and moved on with my life. Now I am trying to figure out what might be the best time to get it done so I can enjoy my summer and have plenty of child care. Ah well, I look forward to having a cute new nose and being able to not be sick all the time

BUT I ASKED YOU TOO SUGAR COAT IT!!!!

I should have just asked for good stories that made it sound like its the best thing ever :)  I know its not, but that is why I havent had it done yet and its only getting worse. I am sure my kids have done further damage a few times with their tiny head massive head butts.

There are so many other surgeries I would rather have if I was being put under!

  • MH just had it done this past Dec. One side has a balloon inflated to open the passage and the other is the traditional surgery. We used a dr that doesn't pack it so recovery wasn't too bad.
  • My H had it done about a year and a half ago.  He had a deviated septum and complained mostly of a sore throat after the surgery.  He definitely needed me for the first day, mainly to bring him broth, yogurt etc. since he was out of it from the anesthesia and the pain meds.  After that he was fine on his own the rest of the week, just taking it easy and recovering.  He said sleeping was uncomfortable for about a week.

If you're going to be caring for your kids while recovering, I'd just try to take it easy.  Watch lots of movies with them, make sure to have really simple, easy to prepare foods for breakfast and lunch.  If you can, leave baths and dinner prep to your H for a week while you recover.

  • I had sinus surgery in 2003?an ethmoidectomy and repaired my deviated septum. I did not have a rhinoplasty (nose job). Before the surgery, I'd have 6 or 7 sinus infections per day. Now I only have 1-3 (this year being more than usual).

The worst part was the recovery for a few days. The packing was quite uncomfortable and you can only breathe through your mouth, so eating is somewhat scary. And you are supposed to sleep elevated, so I used a "husband" bed pillow/arm rest thing to sleep upright on.

I think I had the packing for 2 days and the removal was excruciating. I nearly passed out. But once that was done, the recovery was OK. I just had to be careful not to jar my nose. It was very tender.

  • I would agree with the majority of what others said, and add that not all doctors use packing-- there are several different "methods" and some dont involve packing. Not exactly sure what makes a doctor choose one method over the other, but I didnt have packing, and as a result, I wasnt as uncomfortable as the some others seem to have been based on the descriptions above.

That being said, I was very very sensitive (thats almost not strong enough to describe how sensitive the area was). Even the lightest touch of my nose with my finger pad would bring tears to my eyes until about 5 days out. Also, I was unable to reach down (to pick someone or something up off the floor) for about a week. Anything that involved lowering my head was very painful.

I didnt have kids at the time, but as a mom of a 1 and 2 year old, I can now appreciate how hard it would be to look after them immediately after the procedure. Just the thought of one of them accidently hitting me in the face a few days out from surgery makes my knees weak. My 2 year old especially loves to give huge hugs and can be a little clumsy, and I can totally see how an accidental wack to the face could happen-- I would need help to ensure that didnt happen!!
