I found some corns on his front feet this Friday evening after he exhibited some classic "corn dog" symptoms: flat footedness, avoiding hard surfaces and opting for grass, and limping.
I called the vet Saturday morning and the vet on duty (who has 3 greys himself) told me that if it were his dog, he'd bring him in. So we did. $250 later, the vet we got told us she didn't see anything, though she had stitched up a small toe webbing injury on his back foot. We kept telling her over and over...there is something wrong with his pads! He's limping and it's getting worse! "We haven't seen him limp. We don't see anything on his feet. Here's some Tramadol anyway."
I started to feel like this:
Finally we got him in to the orthopedist today (at the same vet), and they removed 3 corns. Chip is still at the vet with him, but supposedly when corns are removed like this ("hulled"), the pain relief is instant. Walking on corns is apparently like walking around barefoot on cement with a sharp rock taped to the bottom of your foot. I feel terrible that it took us so long to figure it out.
So he should be OK for now. The corns will probably come back. Over 60% of "corn dogs" get them again. He won't be going running with me anymore; that could definitely aggravate them.
I'm so excited to go home and see him and take him for a walk! He hasn't wanted to go for a walk for weeks. I'm so happy he's not in pain, and that it's not something much worse like cancer. Thanks everyone for your support through this...it's been rough on us!

Aw, poor Nite. Corns suck--there have been quite a few greys with corns at our rescue. Glad it got figured out and he feels better.
