Am I overreacting? Re: OB office

So I just got a call from my OB office about bloodwork that I did Friday.  Apparently the doctor ordered the wrong test.  She ordered a sequential screen that can't be done unless I did the first part.  So the nurse practictioner suggested that I go get bloodwork done at the U/S place so that they can send it off to the lab that did the bloodwork from the NT scan.  Why doesn't a doctor know this in the first place?  Of course, I'd have to be there before 5pm, so I'd have to miss more time at work.

I was planning on switching doctors anyway, have first appt with new doc next Tuesday, but this is the last straw.  I think I'll hold off on any other screens or blood work until the new doc orders it.

Re: Am I overreacting? Re: OB office

  • if this were an isolated incident,  i would think your over-reacting. that said, it seems there is some history, and without knowing that, i can't say one way or another...
  • My doctor took blood and then tested it for the wrong thing as well. It is annoying since Lab Corp closes so early, but I don't think it is a huge deal.

  • Is it common for a doctor to not know what test they're supposed to order for their patients?

There definitely is history, a few of the dr's have no bedside manner, long wait times and there's a new doc there that I don't think knows what she's talking about at all.  I have 2 friends that have had horrific experiences with this office - one having a stillborn son at 35 weeks after seeing them twice that week and being sent to the hospital and another that broke her pelvis while delivering and went undiagnosed for weeks.  That's just the short story.

At least I know it's not just my doctor!  :)  Super annoying.  I wouldn't be as annoyed if I was going back to Quest, but that's not where she's sending me.

  • I'd be pissed. Also, not sure what screen it is, but our MFM said the quad screen isn't reliable at all for multiples.
  • i can see how it could be ordered incorrectly...if i am not mistaken the two names of the test are very close...that said, if you are uncomfortable in the practice you need to leave immediately.  you don't need the added stress of what ifs...you need to fully trust your ob at this point in time...

that said, i would call the dr's office that your going to see on tuesday and see if you should get the test done before hand...if i remember correctly, there is a window of time in which that test has to be done. you don't want that window to close...

I think it would be the equivalent.  It was the 2nd sequential screen, done between 14-22 weeks.  I don't think any screen that is bloodwork alone is reliable for multiples but my dr still thought it would be good to know.  I'm not putting a lot of weight on it because I figure there's a high risk of of false positive.

  • I had 2 difficult pregnancies with a slew of issues, so if I went in and my Dr wasnt on top of it, I would have had difficulty trusting him. I needed to trust him because I was putting my kids lives in his hands and I needed to have someone I could trust. I dont trust any other Dr in my life 100% but I did trust my OB, so if the relationships isnt there, then you should move on.

There's a 1st sequential which is done around the time of the NT scan and then the 2nd sequential that is done from 14-22 weeks.  She also could have just ordered the triple or quad screen.  If she ordered that, I'd have results.  But since I didn't do a 1st sequential screen with Quest, they can't do the 2nd.  I had higher than normal risks after the NT scan which is why she wanted to order the sequential screen.

I'd still be in the window next week.  Since blood work is so unreliable, especially with multiples, I feel better about getting my reassurance from an u/s and that would only be a few weeks away.

Ha, sadly you are not alone. I was annoyed at first because I was thinking, what if they missed something because of the delay? But in the grand scheme of things, I didn't want to get stressed over it. It sounds like you leaving that practice is def for the best. Good luck!

That's how I feel, I need to know that these babies are in good hands.  So far this pregnancy hasn't been too difficult, but know that multiples and diabetes could definitely cause some complications.  I'm hoping that the new doctor is a good fit!  I love my PCP and my endo, so I really want an OB that I love too!

  • What doctor do you go to?
  • Call them and ask if they can call the lab to run the first test with the blood they have and then go for the second when you change doctors.  I'm not sure exactly how long the labs hold the blood but know it is quite a few days.

I've called labs both Quest and Labcorp to have tests added quite often.

The doctor is in Rockland County.  PM me if you really want to know.

It's different labs.  This bloodwork was done with Quest and the test has to be done with the same lab that did the blood work from my NT scan.  It would make it much easier if that was possible!
