how do you deal with this? toddler eating?

ok, Mikey shoves food in, no matter what, give him bigger pieces and he tries to shove the whole thing in, give him small bites and he shoves them in all at once. Give him one at a time and he screams in a fit. I have had to do a finger sweep more times than I care to at this point, but I am at a loss at how to teach this- ideas? thanks!

  • You have the opposite problem of me... Alexis barely touches anything. Good luck!

  • Right now, I try to tell him not to put the big pieces in--other than that I figure he will learn..I'm not going to stick my finger in for fear of it being bitten!  When he chokes a little, I will tell him that he took too big of a bite and to chew before biting more.

  • I'd still do one at a time. He'll learn that you WILL eventually give him more and I'd rather have a screaming child than a choking child.
  • I taught him "chew", so with whatever he's got in his mouth, he chatters his teeth/gums. He's not *really* chewing that great, but it at least slows him down in between bites.

  • oh and this is all new- he never did it before- and only started about 3 weeks ago- he does chew- and I am constantly saying take bites, slow, not too much. I know the one at a time is probably the answer, but that is so time consuming and then that means, not eating myself since I will be feeding him pretty much. He is such a little bratty boy these days!

  • I don't really have any advice but DS puts too much food in his mouth ALL.THE.TIME.  He usually winds up gagging on it or spitting up.  It's such a pain. Thank goodness he hasn't choked, but we still put all his food in front of him.  Sometimes he's controlled but not always.  And sometimes he just gets too lazy to chew his food well.  Good luck! Hope he outgrows it.

  • m's gag reflex is on the tip of her tongue, so we are pretty careful with what we give her...usually its cut up pretty small...and we have to give only a few pieces at a time otherwise a handful goes in...there are some things that we do give her to hold and bite so she can develop that skill, but its usually at the beginning of the meal so her tummy is empty...she is getting better, but for the time being she gets only a few pieces at a time...
