King Cake - Did you eat king cake today?

Confess  :)

I did and it was really good - this one almost tasted like a kolache, with creamcheese filling.  I did not get the baby.

Re: King Cake - Did you eat king cake today?

  • Sadly, no. DS1 and I were going to make one but I've been feeling so cruddy we didn't get to it. I'm craving gumbo now too. I'm thinking we will need a belated Mardi Gras celebration.
  • I didn't eat any today, but I did have some last night that a friend brought to share with our running group. It was pretty tasty. I'm going to New Orleans for the RNR Mardi Gras Half Marathon in about a week and a half and will probably have some there as well. I'm obviously not giving up sweets for Lent.
  • I have never tried king cake and really really want too.

  • I've never had king cake.  This has got to be changed!
  • Nope.  I'd bet $100 that no one within a 20 mile radius knows what a king cake is and within a 40 mile radius has ever eaten a king cake.

There was absolutely no talk of mardi gras, etc. at school today (which, when I was in HS, was always a topic discussed by us as kids).

I probably wouldn't have either except for the fact that a college roommate had king cake overnighted from some bakery for fat Tuesday every year.  She was from NO and a weeee bit proud of it.

You might have problems finding them year round (the tradition is to only bake them for carnival season). The only bakery I know that makes them year round is Haydel's and you have to order them in advance.

  • Oh, and forgot to answer the question. I didn't. Had my fill of king cake this season though, I promise.

Hmm. Thanks for the heads up. The two friends I'm going with both lived in NO for several years and they have been talking about getting a couple to bring home. Perhaps they have forgotten that you can't get them year round.

  • I made one last year and then this year I made King Cupcakes for everyone at work...the one woman was going around trying to find and claim the baby for herself since no one else knew why they would want a baby!

  • Alas - I have never had one! One day, though... :)

  • I made one! Cream cheese filling. Was delicious. My mother-in-law brought one up from LA last year, and it was "eh". This one was definitely better! I think they're probably better the fresher they are.

Does your cw know that if she gets the baby she makes the cake next year!!?!

and the party is at her house!!

     http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_cake

The person who gets the trinket is declared the King or Queen of the day, however in some states the person who gets the trinket or baby will soon have a baby.   The king or queen is usually obligated to supply the next king cake or host the next party or both

  • No, but I now I want some so badly I can almost taste it!
  • Nope, and I've actually never had it before.

I also did not get a paczki. :(

  • I wanted to make one but ended up having no time.  Oh well!
  • I did! And I got beads... (and thank god, I did not have to flash anything...)

A friend of mine went to NOLA and SO and I watch his little furballs, so he brought us back some goodies and we tasted the kings cake tonight...

  • No king cake, but there were fresh packzis in every aisle on my floor at work. Someone brought them in from a Polish bakery on their way in this morning. Sadly, I couldn't have one. One of these days I'll have to make GF packzi just to have my fill!
  • I didn't eat any today.
  • No, it's not that common around here.
  • Years ago, I was in NO around Mardi Gras for a dance competition and had King Cake. SO GOOD! I found a recipe on Pinterest, but didn't get a chance to make it. Might this weekend though. Trying to talk DH into going to Razoo's for cajun food this weekend. Yummmmm.

  • I thought about picking one up yesterday, but we still have a ton of leftover cheesecake from having my family visit over the weekend, plus all of my kids' Valentine candy, and the leftover doughnuts from the batch we baked on Monday to welcome our neighbors home.  I just couldn't bring more sugar home!
