menu help...

I am at a loss. I'm co-hosting a shower with my mom and aunt and I kind of took over the food, their ideas were yuck!! Bride gave me her fave foods and I could go so many different directions, but I can't pin anything down.

definitely going with basic garden salad (her choice)
and a hot mexican dip (again, her choice)

her faves.

alfredo, fried chicken, lasagna, mac and cheese, cheesy potatoes, pizza, bbq, desserts are easy, she likes cheesecake and chocolate! lol!

the shower isn't until June, and will be a luncheon. I was thinking picnic like, but damn, those are all pretty heavy foods lol! Her colors are ivory and plum and she likes fruity so I was thinking of a blackberry mint julep for a sig. drink.
I really want to make this special for her. Her own mother flat out told her she would contribute noting to anything tell her what date and time she needed to show up for the wedding.  I always always always over plan and make way to much food for anything I plan! I would love some help with nailing down a menu. Thank you so much!!

Re: menu help...

  • so far what I was thinking was fruit kabobs, and I am loving the individual veggie cups with the dressing on the bottom, or is that dumb?
  • I'm trying to think of something to lighten up her favorite foods.  I love the signature drink.  One thought is to do pizza with her favorite foods as toppings: A bbq sauce, pulled pork, caramelized onion ; a ricotta, marinara, meat (to mimic lasagna); and alfredo with chicken and broccoli.  Served with the salad and fruit kabobs it could make a really nice lunch.

  • Hello, obvious picnic answer: fried chicken! :)  Ixnay on the Mexican dip - you have to pick one direction and fried chicken makes things so easy.

    Apps

    Veggies & dip

    Crackers & spread

    Main

    Green salad

Fried chicken (offer grilled as well if you'd like)

    Corn salad

    Bride's macaroni & cheese

    Fruit skewers/cups

    Dessert

    Glazed plum cheesecake

    Chocolate ganache sandwiches

    Drinks

    Blackberry mint julep

    NA sparkling lemonade punch

Man, this menu is making me wish for summer!  This is pretty casual, but the ideas and presentation can be dressed up.  Possible casual invites that I've been loving but have no excuse to use: poppies, watercolor bouquet

    Love this!

  • I know!  The fricken Mexican dip is what is throwing me off!  She says it's the only thing she wants!  Maybe I'll have a small crockpot of it just for her!!

Honestly, I think you could skip it, put together a beautiful shower, and it would be fine. If she turns to you and says, "but where's my dip?" you really should rethink this friendship. Wink

  • The dip isn't so bad to me, it's an appetizer, you'll have that out first with some other stuff like veggies/ranch for as people arrive.

I would forget the italian, though it would have been my first choice as menu basis...but the mexican wipes that out

I think the pizzas are too difficult to keep warm

And I can't see eating actual fried chicken at a wedding

So with that, I would serve a main course of bbq and rolls (maybe pulled chicken and beef), macaroni and cheese (or the potatos but one of the other), and garden salad. You might think of a few things you can add to this like maybe green beans, broccoli salad, corn/bean salad.

For dessert, you can do individual cheesecakes perhaps with a pretty pick in each one to decorate.

If people offer to bring something, you can ask them to bring a munchie (tell them what you'll be having) or a chocolate dessert.

  • I was thinking about the fried chicken and just thinking that it wasn't something I'd eat at a shower.  Adding a grilled chicken option might help, but I'd just skip the fried then.

On that corn salad- have you done that with frozen corn?  It would be a good for my kid's party, but there won't be fresh corn this time of year.

  • I love the fried chicken! Could you do something like friend chicken tenders to make it a little less messy?

I haven't tried it with frozen.  It seems like it'd work.  Maybe someone in one of those 100+ reviews mentions it?
