Impressed with petco

I went to petco yesterday since it was Sherlock's (estimated) first birthday and I wanted to get him a treat. They have a new aisle that is all good quality foods! I saw a few grain free options and some of the better brands you'll find in a bigger pet store like Wellness, Blue, Natural Balance, etc. I've been trying to get my mom to switch to higher quality food for her cats and now it's way easier for her to choose. Hooray!

Re: Impressed with petco

  • Yeah our Petco brought in some good food brands a few months ago. I was very excited because a few weeks after buying a bag of food, I get 2 $5 off coupons for the next few bags.

  • Our Petco has had the better brands for some time.  It's my favorite pet chain.

  • We don't have a petco in our area but we do have petsmart. They have been carrying the better brands for quite a while and I love it. I love our local petsmart!

  • They do have a really good food selection, but I'm feeling a little iffy about their small animal section. My local Petsmart keeps 1-4 animals in a cage depending on the type (mice, rats, etc), but the last Petco I went to had about 20 mice in one cage, and 10 rats in a cage, and the cages weren't that big and they seemed pretty crowded. The checkout person said that number was normal Sad

    This.

Also, yes, they carry good foods, but they are almost always more expensive there than at an independently- owned pet boutique. And I'd rather support a locally-owned business.

  • Petco is so far the most expensive for us, and when we realized this we stopped going there. The mark-up is sometimes upto $5 more than other stores (and this is just for an item that would otherwise cost $10 in a local store). $10 vs $15? And I did make sure it was not just one item. The food bags are $3 more and the Medium Kongs are $2-3 more. After that, I vowed never to step foot in that store again. Also, ours did not sell TOTW and our puppy has terrible gas on wellness (the $5 off coupon were great except they actually really end up being $1 off).

    I agree.

But I suppose if it gives someone the chance to feed a higher quality food than what they would pick up at the grocery store I can support that.  :-)

Our petco doesn't carry small animals anymore. They have a sign on all their empty cages that says something to the fact that due to customer requests they stopped carrying small animals. I thought it was pretty awesome.
