"we beat it out of her"
i am traveling for work and bumped into a guy at the airport that i dont know well but he works for the same comapny so we had coffee during the long layover in london. we got to talking about pets and he was telling me about his rescued dog. fantastic, i thought! it's a herding breed mix and when the first brought her home she was herding the kids a bit. i said "oh no! i do hear that is common though". he said "oh dont worry, we beat it out of her in just a few days." ugh. i was literally speechless! he then went on to talk about how sensitive she is and is terrified of other dogs. sigh.

i so wanted to say at least something, but he is a bit high up the food chain. even if not, i wa sos hocked that i am not sure i could have mustered an answer anyway!

Well gee, no wonder she's sensitive and terrified of other dogs!
Is there anyway he was just joking around by any chance? It's a horrible joke, but still!
Sable herds the cats sometimes. I had no idea "beating" it out of her was the way to go. Here I thought NILIF, positive reinforcement, and patience was the way to deal with it.
JFC.

I'm really hopeful he did not mean it literally.
definitely not joking. he is not american so perhaps more accepted where he grew up? (not to say there arent areas in the states that have different cultural norms...)
A German Shepherd and what we think is a Doberman Mix.

"Maybe he was using the term colloquially? Like he really meant, "Oh, we trained it out of her," but instead he used the word "beat," but didn't literally mean BEAT."
Agreed. I think that might be an over-reaction. I'm pretty sure I've used that expression before and I've never come close to beating my dogs, but instead referring to beating the idea into them ie lots of training and repetition! I highly doubt if someone truly beat their dog they'd casually share it with you.
