how do you manage dog hair?

What products do you use to keep it from spreading throughout the entire house?

Our girl is a lab/chow/parts unknown, mix.  DH keeps saying we should just shave herStick out tongue.  Her coat is like a lab's in texture, and length.

We have one of these, that I manage to use every couple of days.

ETA:  Even if he were half serious about it, I would never, ever let him shave her.  She's such a cute ginger!

Re: how do you manage dog hair?

  • I honestly have hair all over in my house. That is after daily sweeping, vacuuming every day- every other day, and regular brushings.  If there are places you don't want hair (after the daily upkeep) can you section off the rooms you don't want hair?  I wouldn't shave her.  A dog's coat does so much for a dog to regulate temperature, protect it from elements and you could end up with pretty severe skin problems, etc.

    ETA:  I would also look into a furminator...they are a God-send!

  • Is dog hair manageable? With a husky in our house, it's become a condiment.

Don't shave the dog! They have a coat for a reason, it helps them regulate their body temperature in the heat and cold.

Ditto all of this, except I have an Aussie mix.

  • The furminator is amazing!  I used it on a malamute I used to have and it was the best thing ever.

  • I vacuum and dust like there's no tomorrow. Luckily, we registered for an awesome vacuum for our wedding and we go it! SO that helps.

We also use lint rollers on our furniture after vacuuming. ESPECIALLY when company comes -  it is so embarrassing when someone sits on your couch and when they stand up they're furry.

As for shaving - we do "trim" our lab's fur in the summer. AKA - he gets a hair cut, just so its not so long and he's more comfortable in the heat.

  • I have that same brush tool pictured....it works great..I have short hair boxer/pitbulls and it really pulls the dead hair out!

  • We bought a Roomba (robot vacuum).  It's great, it's runs everyday while we're at work.  It's made a huge difference in the amount of hair in our house.
  • My immediate reaction when I read the title of the post was, "We don't". It doesn't matter how much we furminate, how many times a day I sweep, our fluff ball still gets fur everywhere. At this point I've given up and I just do the best I can. lol

awesome.  We'll plugging in the roomba immediately when it gets here on Sunday!  I love using the zoom groom on windy days and watching all that fur, just float away on the breeze.  I try do it every day but sometimes it just doesn't happen.

  • We don't manage it. We have just accepted the fact that we have dog hair everywhere, and there is nothing we can do about it.

  • If I really care, we vacuum.  Otherwise I wear a lot of grey and not black nor white (two Great Pyrs and a Newf).  I've figured out what clothing attracts dog fur and avoid it.

We have hard floors and no carpet.  We try to keep the dogs out of our daughter's room and my sewing room. The hair they lose is mostly the soft undercoat, so it collects on its own and makes hair rhinos.

Please don't shave your dog.  When the hair grows back in, you'll just have shorter pieces falling out all the time.

What food are you feeding?  Switching to a higher quality food may help the shedding.

  • We feed raw, give fish oil, furminate, and vacuum the dog but it's still incredible the amount that's come off him in the last few days. Spring is here!
  • FYI, we shave our senior lab. My vet recommended it since it's so hot in Texas. We don't leave her outside for long periods so we don't have to worry about the sun but when she is playing outside she is so much more comfortable and active. When she swims her hair dries very fast. We also give our dogs fish oil which seems to help some with shedding.
