School Districts

DH is currently interviewing for a job in Mountain View and if he gets it we'll be moving from the midwest.  We're looking at places to live in Mountain View/Sunnyvale/San Jose area.  Any thoughts on what are the good schools or areas to avoid.  Oldest kiddo is currently preschool age so we'd be looking at preschool options too.  Thanks!

Re: School Districts

  • greatschools.net has good information on a lot of schools/districts.
  • Wow, how exciting! Good luck to your husband!

I live in Mountain View and work as a Realtor :) I love my neighborhood (Monta Loma) and my kidlet just started Kinder.

For schools, I'd suggest going to the state Dept of Educations website for their current API scores and information. www.cde.ca.gov. The API is scored from 1 to 1000, a higher score is desirable. The scores and information is also broken down on demographic information for each school, which can be helpful. That being said, the scores are just one tool in evaluating a school.

All of the areas you mentioned have great schools in them but some will also have schools that are not doing as well. San Jose, for instance, is a very large area and has a lot more schools than Mountain View or Sunnyvale. Mountain View & Sunnyvale have fewer schools and it will be a little easier to get a handle on them.

One easy (and very general) rule: the higher the property values, the better the schools. Obviously, there is some variation but schools are a major factor in the value of a location and it strengthens the property values.

If you are looking for information on home prices, I'd recommend www.MLSListings.com. It is owned by our MLS system, serves a huge geographical area and has the most complete and comprehensive information available to the public. Take Zillow with a large grain of salt...very large. :)
