stepping outside of my comfort zone

I like to think I dress decently. Probably not too stylishly, but I'm professional and tend to wear clothes that are somewhat flattering (well, as flattering as they can be to my slightly overweight figure).

But I am conservative with colors and combinations. I wear a lot of black/gray pants and tops with a colorful cardi or jacket, or a bright shell with a neutral suit, or neutral pants and cardigan.

This morning, though, I wore black pants, a fuchsia shell and a violet cardigan. And it looks great! I have a necklace that picks up both the fuchsia and violet tones perfectly.

Re: stepping outside of my comfort zone

  • Pretty much everything I own is black or gray.

I had a friend help me find a dress for a wedding (because every dress I own is black), everything she was picking out was orange or red or yellow or fushia, etc.

She asked what dress I picked.  It's navy.

    lol

  • Good for you!!

I love color!  But like you, I usually base it with black or gray.  Just seems easier to mix and match.  I do have a pair of winter white wool pants that I have been wearing a lot with brighter colors, but then I never know what to do with my shoes.

  • Yea! You can't go wrong with the basics (black, gray, white), but color is fun! I have a pair of red dress pants that I have gotten quite a few compliments on.

Accessories, shoes, and handbags are my favorite ways to add pops of color to outfits.

  • I feel the same way. I have to say, Pinterest is helping me with this a lot. Even just adding a pop of color (I feel like such a tool saying that) really helps.

  • That's great! I also dress pretty conservatively and have been trying to step out of my comfort zone.

I totally agree with the above statement. Pinterest has been helping me a lot with adding color and accessorizing better. I feel like I have certain fashion "rules" stuck in my head that keep me boxed in to boring combinations and Pinterest has been inspiring me to do new things.

  • Yes  I'm also more conservative and not super stylish, but I find that accessories help a lot. A great necklace or scarf can make an otherwise boring outfit look pulled together.

  • Yay!  Even a baby step is terriffic.  I was in a meeting this morning with about 15 other people and there were only three people in the entire room wearing a color other than gray, blue, black or brown.  (And one was my boss with just a yellow tie in addition to the neutral drab outfit.)  I couldn't believe how BORING the entire room looked :P

  • Yup. I'm right there with you. The vast majority of my wardrobe is black and gray. To make matters worse, I CANNOT wear jewelry to work.

I realized a few weeks ago that I have ZERO pattern (outside of maybe tiny stripes/etc. in suits) in my life. So my new mission is to start small and buy cami type things to wear under suits that will make it more, I dunno... zazzy?  Big Smile

(well what other word was I to use? Making an outfit 'pop' was already taken!)

Zazzy. Like Sheldon, on Big Bang Theory, and his cat, Zazzles. Thank you for that smile o' the day!

(I am sporting a pink shirt (Polo, button down) and tan pants. Woo to the hoo.)
