The world is so different

When I was young, you wondered alone in your room if you were pretty. You had parents who loved you and told you you were beautiful. You didn't need the opinion of nameless faceless strangers on the internet to validate your feelings.

This breaks my heart.

Re: The world is so different

  • I didn't watch it but I think regardless of internet this has gone of for generations. They just did it to your face or in notes in class before. Maybe harder than the internet but it happened. And I agree I too had parents who loved me like that but I do know quite a few who didn't.
  • I don't have sound at work but just looking at that girl's face, I can't help but think about my daughter. She looks so small and sad. I just want to hug her.
  • Of course, history is plagued by "mean girls," who write notes and call you names. This is 11-13 year old girls posting video's on youtube asking if they are pretty. Would you have ever walked around aimlessly asking people if they thought you were ugly???? Cause that's what this equates to. Needing random strangers to validate your worth through your appearance. That's heartbreaking. Thinking that posting a video of yourself to the internet will get you some sort of acceptance about yourself is just a sad, sad state of affairs.

  • This is disturbing behavior for teenagers but 12 is definitely on the young side for this behavior.  Then again kids are doing this sh*t younger and younger now.  12 is the new 16 these days.  Tongue Tied

Back in high school everyone used to use those ratemyface.com hotornot.com websites.  I remember uploading my picture to hotornot.com.  I got nice comments and I also got nasty comments too.

I know this is way different than that.  I guess the scary thing is this seems like normal behavior to children.

OMG... there was no internet when I was in high school... I know, totally random and unrelated, but that was my first thought when I read this, lol.

ANYWAY... this makes me sad.  I know there were mean girls when we were small but not six hundred fifty thousand of them telling you what they thought :(

There was internet in high school for me (about half of high school anyway) but I totally remember doing that crap.  I was also on AOL all the time sending my picture to anyone who asked.  In fact all I'd see in the AOL chat was guys and girls asking "age? location?" and often times "got a pic?".  Sometimes if they deemed you "ugly" they wouldn't want to type to you in the chat room anymore!  There was also a program called a "punter" which would send constant blank instant messages over and over in data overload to make your computer crash if someone thought you were ugly or didn't like you for whatever other reason.  Ahh the good old days of AOL.
